Women’s Lacrosse Earns IWLCA Academic Honors

WASHINGTON – The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) has recognized Georgetown as one of 339 schools to earn academic squad honors across all divisions for the 2018 season. Additionally, senior attacker Sarah Cheney (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) and graduate student Cristina McCarthy (Rockville, Md. / Academy of the Holy Cross/James Madison) were among 462 student-athletes named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll.

The IWLCA honored 462 student-athletes from 102 different institutions with inclusion in the 2018 IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll. All student-athletes were nominated by their schools and have achieved at least junior status academically and had a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater.

Cheney, a two-year captain, appeared in 18 games for the Hoyas this past season.  She tallied four goals and one assist for five points on the year.  Cheney won the 2018 Kim Simons Coaches Award making her the back-to-back recipient.  This marks her second-consecutive nod to the academic team.  She graduated magna cum laude in May from the College of Nursing and Health Studies majoring in human science.

McCarthy spent just one season on the Hilltop after transferring from James Madison University.  The attacker appeared in 18 games with nine starts to her credit.  McCarthy managed eight goals and three assists for 11 points on the season as well as 15 ground balls.  McCarthy is currently a student in the sports industry manage program in Georgetown's School of Continuing Studies.

The Hoyas returned to the NCAA Tournament this past season and spent the entire year in the national rankings sitting as high as No. 21 in the IWLCA poll and No. 17 in the Inside Lacrosse poll. Georgetown finished the season with a mark of 12-7 and returns its top five scorers in 2019.
