WASHINGTON – This summer, several current members of the Georgetown baseball team played around the country in various summer collegiate baseball leagues. Additionally, three former Hoyas are playing professionally for major league organizations.
By the end of the summer, a total of five Hoyas were playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Two rising juniors, Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) and Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy), pitched the entire summer in Cape Cod. Killam, who set the Georgetown single-season strikeout record with 97 this spring, threw for the Falmouth Commodores. In 10 appearances out of the bullpen, Killam finished with a 3.43 ERA in 18.1 innings pitched, recording 22 strikeouts.
Morreale pitched for the Bourne Braves and made a team-high 14 relief appearances. He struck out 33 in 21.1 innings, recording a 2.95 ERA. His ERA was a stingy 1.53 before a couple of tough outings to end the summer.
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), who started all 55 games at shortstop as a freshman in 2018, played for the Danbury Westerners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). He led the Westerners, and ranked fifth in the NECBL with a .368 (46-for-125) batting average in 36 games. He finished with three home runs, seven doubles, 21 RBIs, 31 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. He was named an all-star and to the All-NECBL First Team when the season ended. McCabe signed on with Orleans in the Cape Cod League for the final game of the season and went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. He drew a 12-pitch walk and scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning.
Rising sophomore Alex Gamache (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) also joined Orleans this summer, helping provide the Firebirds with catching depth. He got into two games and had five at-bats, scoring one run.
Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton), a rising sophomore, pitched for the Herndon Braves in the Cal Ripken League. When the Braves' season was over, he joined Killam in Falmouth and made two relief appearances, allowing two runs and striking out five in 2.0 innings.
Lamon was one of four current and future Hoyas who played in the local Cal Ripken League. With Herndon, Lamon made four starts and seven appearances overall on the mound. He struck out 25 in 21.1 innings, going 2-2 with a 2.95 ERA. He was teammates with classmate Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), who appeared in 29 games, both behind the plate and as the designated hitter. He finished with two home runs, three doubles, three triples and 11 RBIs.
Left-handed pitcher Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) pitched for the Alexandria Aces in the Cal Ripken League. In seven starts, covering 38.1 innings, he is 3-1 with a 3.75 ERA and 27 strikeouts. Georgetown incoming freshman Carter Bosch, who graduated this spring from the Potomac School, also pitched for the Aces and made seven starts on the mound. In 34.0 innings, Bosch went 3-1 and led the pitching staff with a 1.32 ERA and 37 strikeouts.
Three Hoyas - Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus), Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) - all suited up for the St. Cloud Rox in the Northwoods League. Cushing made 10 appearances on the mound with nine starts. In 51.2 innings, he went 3-2 with a 3.65 ERA and 41 strikeouts, earning a selection to the Northwood's All-Star Game. In 1.0 inning of work at the midsummer classic, Cushing fired a perfect inning with a strikeout.
Weisenberg played in 54 games and hit .289 (57-for-197) with five home runs, seven doubles and two triples. His 32 RBIs ranked second on the team and he scored 31 runs with eight stolen bases. Davis appeared in 61 games and batted .277 (65-for-235) with three home runs and a team-record 22 doubles. He finished with 22 RBIs and 34 runs scored while ranking third on the team with 10 stolen bases.
Rising junior Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central/La Salle Institute) was also in the NECBL, pitching for the Newport Gulls. In 14 appearances, including three starts, he recorded a 6.67 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 31.0 innings.
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School), a rising junior, played for the Norcross (Ga.) Astros in the Sunbelt League for the second-consecutive summer. He ranked fifth on the team with 10 RBIs and also had a pair of doubles. Voted the best defensive first baseman by the league's coaches, Achecar took part in the Southeast Collegiate Prospect Showcase as a member of the Sunbelt League All-Star Team.
Rising sophomore Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) suited up for the Marthas Vineyard Sharks in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL). In 24 games, he batted .299 (23-for-77) with a home run, five doubles, 20 runs scored and 12 stolen bases.
Will Salomon (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick), a rising junior, played for the Thundering Herd in the Hudson Valley Collegiate Baseball League. He finished the summer batting .333 (13-for-39) with a home run and four doubles in 16 games.
Simon Mathews (C'17), is in his second season pitching in the Los Angeles Angels organization. He started the year with the Angels' Class A affiliate, the Burlington Bees. In 10 games, with eight starts, Mathews was among the team leaders with a 2.04 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 42.2 innings pitched. He earned a promotion to Advanced Class A, the Inland Empire 66ers, in early June. In 12 appearances, with 10 starts, he has a 3.47 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 57.0 innings, compiling a 4-3 record with one save. Mathews has also made two appearances, one start, in Triple-A Salt Lake where he is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA and six strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
David Ellingson (MSB'17), who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners following his junior year in 2016, returned to the Hilltop and completed his finance degree in December 2017. His 2018 season started back with the Everett AquaSox - Seattle's short season rookie team. In seven appearances out of the bullpen, he was 2-0 with one save, a 2.19 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12.1 innings. Ellingson earned a promotion to Advanced Class A Modesto where he has a 4.09 ERA and 13 strikeouts in seven appearances. He had a strong start with Modesto until one rough appearance caused his ERA to spike.
Matt Smith (B'16), who was drafted six picks ahead of Ellingson by the Milwaukee Brewers, missed the entire 2017 season because of injury. He is still listed on the disabled list as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
