WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) was named the BIG EAST Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week while senior Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) was selected to the weekly honor roll, as announced by the league office on Monday. The Freshman of the Week accolade is the second this season for Akinjo and the fourth overall for the team, while Govan garnered honor roll recognition for the sixth time this year.
 
Both Akinjo and Govan had a pair of standout performances as the Hoyas split the week in BIG EAST action. They were each instrumental in GU's thrilling double-overtime victory over Providence on Saturday.
 
Against the Friars, Akinjo scored 20 points to go with a career-high nine assists in the win. He hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in overtime to push Georgetown to an additional extra frame and the eventual victory. He also tallied 13 points and dished out six assists in a midweek tilt at Xavier.
 
Govan had a career day against Providence, scoring a career-high 33 points to go with 14 rebounds and four blocks. The double-double was the sixth of the season for the senior center and continues to lead the BIG EAST. Govan also added 27 points and eight rebounds against the Musketeers.
 
The Hoyas return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 15 as they welcome Marquette to the Nation's Capital. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at Capital One Arena and the game will be shown live on FS1. The game can be heard locally on The Team 980 with Rich Chvotkin calling the game.
