Donohoe, Carbone Sweep BIG EAST Weekly Honors

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team swept the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week awards, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Sophomore Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) was named the Male Athlete of the Week, while classmate Belinda Donohoe (Cambridge, Mass. / Concord Carlisle) earned Female Athlete of the Week honors. The awards included achievements over the past several weeks.

Last month, Carbone qualified for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke at the U.S. Winter National Championships. He became the second Hoya in program history to qualify for the Olympic Trials. In the 100, Carbone beat the qualifying time by .13 seconds to seal his spot at the Olympic Trials, which will take place in Omaha, Nebraska in the summer of 2020. In the 200, he swam to a time of 2:02.83 to beat the qualifying time by 0.16 seconds.

In Georgetown's first meet of the semester on Saturday, Carbone remained undefeated in collegiate backstroke races, sweeping the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. He won the 100 back by more than a half second with a time of 50.19 seconds, and followed that up with a victory in the 200 back by more than a full second in 1:49.53. Carbone also finished second in the 200-yard IM (1:53.89) and swam the opening leg of the 200-yard medley relay where the Hoyas finished second (1:34.33). He helped Georgetown to sweep D.C. rival American, while falling to GW.

Donohoe won a pair of individual events on Saturday, touching the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. She claimed the 50 free by just .12 seconds, touching the wall in 23.93 seconds, and took the 100 free by just .08 seconds with a time of 52.45 seconds. Donohoe also swam the anchor leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:46.70) as well as the anchor leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.17), which finished second.

This is the second weekly award of the season for Carbone and the fourth of his career. It is the first career weekly honor for Donohoe. Overall, the Blue & Gray has now earned five Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week awards this year as junior Cristina Barrett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and sophomore Phoebe Slaughter (Darien, Conn. / Darien) have both also been selected.

The Hoyas are back in the pool next weekend when they travel to Philadelphia for a dual meet at Drexel on Saturday, Jan. 19. The meet is scheduled to start at noon.
