WASHINGTON – The Georgetown men's cross country team concluded the 2019 season with a 28th-place finish at the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana on Saturday. The conditions at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course were cold and rainy, but the team is no stranger to competing in tough weather. Fifth-year
Nick Wareham led the way for the Hoyas in the 10K. After receiving individual bids due to their performance at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals last weekend,
Madeline Perez and
Sami Corman finished 21 seconds apart in the women's 6K race.
WOMEN'S INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
COACH CULLEY ON THE WOMEN'S RACE
"Sami had a breakthrough season in cross country earning an individual birth to NCAA's, a feat only several in each region accomplish. In Terre Haute, Sami executed the first part of her race brilliantly, but settled too much in the second half falling further behind than we were hoping. She is a great competitor and I know, without a doubt, she will be knocking on the door of the best of the best when she returns next year. Sami will carry this experience back to our women's program with the intention of leading the Hoyas as a team to the finals in the future."
"
Madeline Perez ran the NCAA finals with more heart and grit than any individual I've ever coached. After having a tough time getting off the start, Madeline spent the better part of the race climbing through the field. She ran relentlessly to a top-100 finish beating some of the very best in the NCAA. There are no words to describe my gratitude for all
Madeline Perez has given to our program. I've been a part of the Georgetown Track & Field program for all six years of Madeline's tenure on the Hilltop and I don't know Georgetown without her. She leaves a legacy of leadership through her success and perseverance in the face of many challenging moments that couldn't have ended more fittingly with an NCAA championship showing. She inspires her teammates and coaches daily and was a quiet groundswell that led to a change of tide in our locker room. Her mark will remain on our program for years to come."
MEN'S RESULTS (28 out of 31 teams, 676 points)
COACH BONSEY ON THE MEN'S RACE
"Today certainly was not the result we were looking for. I felt the guys were well prepared and in good spirits heading into the race, but things didn't go our way. I was very proud of
Nick Wareham for putting himself in a good position and fighting for a solid team race. He's dealt with a lot this season and seeing him barely miss out on All-American status was great to see. Behind him, we struggled to be honest. We will go back to the drawing board to figure out what we can improve on in the future. I'm happy to be back at the NCAA meet and glad the young guys got to experience what this meet is like. We will come back in a year hungry and ready to finish much higher than we did today."
