Women’s Tennis Blanked by Xavier

WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's tennis team (1-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) fell 4-0 to Xavier (4-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon, dropping its first BIG EAST Conference match.
 
The Musketeers took an early lead, winning the doubles point after securing victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Cecilia Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md. / Holton Arms School) and partner Anna Short (Birmingham, Mich. / Cranbrook Kingswood) battled at No. 3 but ultimately dropped the match 6-4. With the defeat at No. 2, the duo of Sofie Moenster (Oslo, Norway / Ordrup Gymnasium) and Elena De Santis (Avellino, Italy / Convitto Nazionale P. Colletta) are now 1-2 in conference play.
 
In singles, only three matches played out to completion. At No. 1, Moenster fell to Sophia Abelson 6-2, 6-2 while Short and Lynham were also defeated in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley High School) and De Santis remain unbeaten in BIG EAST play.
 
The Hoyas are back on the court on Thursday, Feb. 14 as they take on the Longwood Lancers at noon at Yates Field House. GU will host Longwood in a doubleheader as the men square off against the Lancers following the end of the women's match.
