WASHINGTON – Georgetown University women's lacrosse goalkeeper
Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla. / Barron Collier) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday when the league announced its weekly awards. Additionally, senior midfielder
Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll.
Chomo led the defensive effort for No. 20 Georgetown in Saturday's 10-7 upset win over then-No. 11 Towson. The senior goalkeeper surrendered just seven goals and made eight saves as the Hoyas knocked off the Tigers on the Hilltop. Chomo's save percentage, saves per game and goals against average all rank in the top three in the BIG EAST this season.
This is Chomo's first honor weekly award of the season and of her career. It is the second for GU on the year.
Whitehurst guided the Georgetown offense in its win on Saturday, totaling a game-high four points off a goal and three assists to go along with two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Trailing 2-1 early, Whitehurst dished back-to-back assists to give the Hoyas their first lead of the game. GU never trailed again, with Whitehurst providing a late-game goal and assist to increase the Hoyas' one-goal lead to three.
This is her first nod to the honor roll this season and the second for the Blue & Gray. It is the fifth of her career.
The Hoyas are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 23 to take on Drexel at Cooper Field. The opening draw is slated for 3 p.m. and live stats as well as a webcast featuring Monika Moore will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
