WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team swept the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week awards, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. Sophomore
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) was named the Male Athlete of the Week, while junior
Cristina Barrett (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) earned Female Athlete of the Week honors. The awards recognize their efforts in Georgetown's meet against BIG EAST opponents Providence and Seton Hall on Saturday.
Carbone captured three individual victories for the Hoyas against Providence and Seton Hall. He was clocked at 50.54 in the 100-yard backstroke for his first win of the competition. Carbone was then the fastest to the wall in the 200-backstroke in a time of 1:50.57. His third victory of the meet came in the 200-yard IM when he was timed at 1:55.70. He also helped the 200-yard medley relay to a second place finish, coming in at 1:34.51 in the opening leg. He helped Georgetown men's team to an easy defeat over Providence (229-62), while falling just short to Seton Hall (173.5-123.5).
Barrett guided the Hoyas to wins over the Friars (226-71) and Pirates (168-131) by continuing her season-long dominance in the freestyle distance events. She touched the wall first in the 1,000-freestyle by 10 seconds with a time of 10:25.45, and proceeded to win by over five seconds in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.09. Barrett was also the runner-up in a close 200 butterfly, recording a time of 2:08.55. She holds top-three league times in both the 500 and 1,000 freestyle races.
This is the second time this year that Carbone and Donohoe have swept the weekly awards, and the third overall sweep for the Hoyas. Carbone and sophomore
Phoebe Slaughter (Darien, Conn. / Darien) claimed both honors on Jan. 16. Overall, the Blue & Gray has now won eight BIG EAST weekly awards this season.
The Hoyas will next be in action at the 2019 BIG EAST Championships, which take place Feb. 20-23 in East Meadow, New York. The GU women have finished second for five-consecutive seasons, while the men's side will be looking to improve upon its third-place finish a year ago. The BIG EAST Championships will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
