James Akinjo Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year

NEW YORK – Georgetown University's James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) was named the 2019 BIG EAST Men's Basketball Freshman of the Year, as announced by the league office on Wednesday. Akinjo is the seventh Hoya to collected the honor in the history of the league.
 
One of three Georgetown players to be named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team, Akinko was selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week four times this season. He led all BIG EAST players with 5.4 assists per game and was second among all freshmen in scoring with 13.4 points per game.
 
Akinjo scored over 20 points in four games this season, posted a career-high 11 assists against Creighton and dished out at least seven helpers in 12 games this season. He was one of just two players unanimously selected for the All-Freshman Team.
 
The seventh Hoya to garner BIG EAST Freshman of the Year accolades, Akinjo is the first to earn the award since Greg Monroe in 2008-09. Other Georgetown players recognized include Jeff Green (2004-05), Allen Iverson (1994-95), Othella Harrington (1992-93), Patrick Ewing (1981-82) and Fred Brown (1980-81).
 
The Hoyas closed out the 2018-19 regular season 19-12 overall and 9-9 in BIG EAST play to finish tied for third place. Georgetown will be the sixth seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament, Presented by Jeep and face third-seeded Seton Hall on Thursday, March 14 at 9:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden in New York.
