Track & Field Begins Outdoor Season at Penn Challenge

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University track & field teams will open their 2019 outdoor season this weekend as the squads head to Philadelphia for the Penn Challenge, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Georgetown will participate in a number of events throughout the day starting with the men's and women's long jump beginning at noon. The first track event will be the women's 2,000-meter steeplechase starting at 12:45 p.m.

The men's squad will feature runners coming off strong performances throughout the past indoor season. Podium finishers from the BIG EAST Indoor Championships including Nate Alleyne (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan), D'Andre Barriffe (Jamaica, N.Y. / Bishop Loughlin Memorial), Kino Cheltenham (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Brooklyn Tech) and Ethan Delgado (El Paso, Texas / El Dorado) will participate in the men's 400-meter dash. All-American Quincey Wilson (Lithonia, Ga. / Arabia Mountain) will also be competing in the event. Three-time indoor BIG EAST Champion Lawrence Leake (Huntington, N.Y. / Huntington) will look to build off his impressive sophomore season as he competes in the 400-meter hurdles.

On the women's side, the talented freshmen trio of Katie Dammer (Clarks Summit, Pa. / Abington Heights), Katherine Modrall (Carmel, Ind. / Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory) and Rachel Sessa (Tewksbury, Mass. / Tewksbury Memorial) will begin their outdoor campaign in the women's 2,000-meter steeplechase. Sophomore Lexi Del Gizzo (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) will race in the women's 800-meter and is coming off an indoor season's best time of 2:10.73 at the ECAC Championships in Boston a few weeks ago.

The Blue & Gray will return to the track next weekend, as the squads will split with one group heading to Gainesville, Florida for the Florida Relays, hosted by the University of Florida, while the other group will head across the country to compete in the Stanford Invitational, hosted by Stanford. The Florida Relays will begin on Thursday, March 28 and the Stanford Invite is set to commence on Friday, March 29.
