Baseball Drops a Pair on Saturday

BETHESDA, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team scored only two runs, dropping a pair of games to Hartford on Saturday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. The Hawks took the first game, which was a continuation of Friday's suspended contest, 14-1 before the Hoyas fell late, 2-1, in game two. With the losses, the Hoyas fall to 6-17 on the season while Hartford improves to 4-11.

Game One: Hartford 14, Georgetown 1
The Hoyas trailed 4-0 in the top of the fourth when the game was suspended on Friday afternoon after severe weather caused a 64-minute delay and then unplayable field conditions forced the teams to finish the game on Saturday. Hartford kept its offense going, pulling away for the 14-1 victory.

Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central / La Salle Institute) started on the mound and struck out four in 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks. Miller Freeman (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell Academy) only allowed one earned run while striking out two in 3.2 innings of relief. Chase Walter (Winston-Salem, N.C. / Forsyth Country Day School) made his collegiate pitching debut and fired a perfect inning.

Hartford pulled away with six runs in the fourth inning, two on Friday evening and four on Saturday. The Hawks added three runs in both the fifth and eighth innings to take a 14-0 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) singled, went to third on a double by Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) and scored on a ground out by Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Conn.). That is all GU would get, however, falling 14-1.

Game Two: Hartford 2, Georgetown 1
The Hoyas tied the game in the eighth inning, but Hartford scored in the ninth to take the second game of the series.

Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla. / Venice) started on the mound and went 5.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out seven. Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va. / Oakton) struck out three in 4.0 innings of relief while giving up one run on three hits.

Hartford got on the board in the top of the first with a two-out walk and two base hits, taking a 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same all the way until the bottom of the eighth inning. Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) led off with a double and went to third on a ground out. John Simourian (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) pinch hit and laid down a perfect safety squeeze as Davis beat the tag at the plate to tie the game, 1-1.

The Hawks, however, quickly regained the lead 2-1 with a solo home run in the top of the ninth.

Georgetown put the tying run on second base with a walk and a single in the bottom of the ninth, but a ground out ended the game.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Shirley Povich Field. Live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
