WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's rowing team opened its spring season at the Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta on the Cooper River. On Saturday morning, three GU boats competed with the varsity eight and second eight boats qualifying for the Grand Final.
The Hoyas' varsity eight boat hit the water first in the second heat of the Women's Varsity Eights against Temple, Lehigh, Washington College and Loyola Maryland. GU finished second with a time of 6:51.08, good enough to advance to the Grand Final against Temple, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, George Washington, and Drexel where they finished in fifth place, 12.60 seconds off the first place finisher, Pennsylvania.
In Event 13, the Women's Junior Varsity Eight race, Georgetown finished second with a time of 7:26.26 with North Carolina finishing in first. Delaware, Colgate and Thomas Jefferson followed in the field of five. The Blue & Gray's second place finish earned them a spot in the Junior Varsity Eight Grand Final where they finished sixth with a time of 7:36.78.
The Women's Varsity Four heat featuring a field of five saw Georgetown crossing the line third, behind Temple and North Carolina, for a time of 8:29.07.
The openweights return to the water on Sunday, March 31 to compete in the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax Station, Virginia.
