WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's heavyweight rowing team faced off against Princeton in their annual scrimmage hosted by Princeton on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas sent a pair of boats to compete against the Tigers on Lake Carnegie.
The first varsity boat - comprised of
William Rau (Devon, Pa.) as coxswain, followed by
Douglas Dreyer (Manhasset, N.Y.) at stroke,
Daniel Eigler-Harding (Arlington, Va.),
Clemente Borgogni (Rye, N.Y.),
Ian Estevao (Arlington, Va.),
Emmett Orts (Philadelphia, Pa.),
Luke Nassif (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.),
Jack Mozingo (Darien, Conn.) and
Justin English (Bettendorf, Iowa) - was the first to hit the water at 8 a.m. The Hoyas finished in second place behind Princeton in a time of 6:02.5.
"We always appreciate the challenge of starting the spring racing season against a team as talented and deep as Princeton," Head Coach
Luke Agnini said. "The varsity crew had a challenging couple of weeks leading up to this race and finally put together a few good practices leading up to Saturday. I thought we had a bad first 200 meters and last 700 meters of the race, with a pretty solid 1,100 meters in the middle. That boat is still finding a definitive rhythm and once that happens, we can really work on the ends of the race. I really wasn't all that pleased with the rowing from that boat yesterday, so I think the result was a testament that our fitness is in a great place. They were working much too hard for their speed."
At 8:15 a.m., the second varsity boats battled in a five-boat race. The crew of
Maxim Goohs (Potomac, Md.) as the coxswain,
Owen O'Brien Powers (Portland, Ore.) at stroke, followed by
Tripp Cave (Dallas, Texas),
Gavin Lafferty (Jenkintown, Pa.),
Vincent Zhu (Orlando, Fla.),
Joe O'Brien (Havertown, Pa.),
Zach Lee (Chelsea, Mich.),
Thomas Kolnik (Sewell, N.J.) and
Blake Sassaman (Winnetka, Ill.) crossed the line in fourth place recording a mark of 6:22.0.
"The 2V had a very unfortunate race after what was the best week of practice for them leading up to it," Agnini continued. "It's a very young boat and this was a tough, but necessary learning experience. Those guys have worked their tails off and pretty soon they are going to start consistently putting together some very solid races. We're looking forward to the next string of races against Marietta, St. Joe's and Temple."
Following Saturday's race, the Hoya heavyweights will return to the water on Wednesday, April 3 for a showdown against Marietta College on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. The lightweights return on Saturday, April 6 as they compete against Yale in Derby, Connecticut.
