WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University softball team is heading back to Florida for spring break and will kick things off with a midweek matchup against the North Florida Ospreys on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the UNF Softball Complex. The Blue & Gray is 5-12 on the season and went 2-1 last weekend in the District Classic. The Hoyas saw wins against Harvard 3-0 and Brown 10-7. Freshman
Mae Forshey (Phoenix, Ariz. / Arcadia) received her first BIG EAST Weekly Honors recognition on Monday for her efforts in the tournament. The catcher led the squad offensively with four hits on the weekend and recorded a double in each game.
For the season, junior
Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del. / Red Lion Christian Academy) and sophomore
Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif. / Terra Linda) are tied for first on the team with .383 batting averages (18 for 47). Jones tallies five doubles, three triples and seven RBIs on the season while Holiday has six doubles and three home runs with 15 RBIs. Forshey leads the Hoyas with seven doubles and 21 hits while batting .375.
Wednesday's game will be the second meeting this season between Georgetown and the North Florida Ospreys. The Hoyas fell to the Ospreys 10-1 in the Madeira Beach Tournament in February. North Florida is 7-6 on the season and went 3-2 in the Madeira Beach Tournament, defeating Albany and Manhattan along with Georgetown. UNF allowed just one run from its opponents in each victory.
Dominica Cocuzza leads the Ospreys offensively with a .553 batting average and is 21 for 38 at the plate. Cocuzza has three doubles, a triple and a homer on the season to go along with 15 RBIs. In the circle, Sydney Matzko has a 3.46 ERA along with 15 strikeouts in 26.1 innings pitched.
Following Wednesday's matchup, the Blue & Gray will play five games in the Jacksonville Tournament beginning Friday, March 8 until Sunday, March 10. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
