WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's tennis team downed Butler 4-0 on Thursday morning in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship in Cayce, South Carolina. The #8-seeded Hoyas defeated the #9 Bulldogs for the second time this year and will advance to the quarterfinals against #1 Xavier on Friday, April 19.
The Blue & Gray made quick work of Butler in doubles as senior duo
Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) and
Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley High School) defeated their opponents 6-2 at No. 1 and
Sofie Moenster (Oslo, Norway / Ordrup Gymnasium) and
Cecilia Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md. / Holton Arms School) blanked the Bulldogs 6-0 at No. 2.
GU continued its dominant performance in singles as Nakagawa defeated Nina Bertino in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 and
Elena De Santis (Avellino, Italy / Convitto Nazionale P. Colletta) held strong at No. 3 for a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sara Linn.
With one point needed to clinch the win and send the Hoyas into the BIG EAST quarterfinal, Lynham defeated Lauren Marx 6-1, 7-6(5) in the tiebreak at No. 6.
