Morreale Named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week; Grzebinski on Honor Roll

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team had a pair of pitchers recognized by the BIG EAST Conference when the league announced its weekly award winners on Monday. Junior right-handed pitcher Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week while sophomore left-hander Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll.

Morreale had a career day on Saturday, setting personal bests with 8.0 innings pitched and 14 strikeouts in a 2-1 victory over the Red Storm. He allowed just one unearned run on seven hits and three walks and his 14 strikeouts surpassed his previous career high of 12 which he set two weeks ago against Villanova. Morreale struck out two batters in each of the first four innings and had multiple strikeouts in seven of his eight frames.

Grzebinski was the lone reliever used out of the bullpen by the Hoyas over the weekend, appearing in all three games and registering three saves. He did not allow a run in 4.0 innings pitched, only allowing three base runners and striking out five. His three saves give him a BIG EAST-leading eight saves on the season. He struck out two in 2.0 hitless innings in Friday's 4-3 victory, before coming back out for a one-inning save in Saturday's 2-1 win where he struck out two more batters. He gave up his only hit of the weekend on Sunday, but finished off his third save with another strikeout.

The honors come after the Hoyas swept a three-game series over St. John's for the first time in program history and the series win was the first by Georgetown over the Red Storm since 2009. It is the first weekly award of the season for the Hoyas and the seventh honor roll selection. It is the first career weekly award for Morreale who was named to the honor roll after the opening week of the season and the second career honor roll pick for Grzebinski.

The Hoyas will next make a quick trip to Catonsville, Maryland for a midweek contest against UMBC. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The Blue & Gray will then return to Shirley Povich Field for a three-game BIG EAST series against Creighton next weekend, May 3-5.
