WASHINGTON – Riding the momentum of the program's first ever three-game sweep of St. John's, the Georgetown University baseball team will next make a quick trip to Catonsville, Maryland for a midweek contest against UMBC. The Hoyas are coming off three BIG EAST wins over St. John's this past weekend at Shirley Povich Field, winning close games by scores of 4-3, 2-1 and 4-1. Georgetown was paced by strong pitching as
Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central / La Salle Institute) fired 7.0 innings with 12 strikeouts on Friday.
Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) set career highs with 8.0 innings and 14 strikeouts in Saturday's victory and
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) pitched 8.0 innings with nine strikeouts on Sunday.
Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) was the only Hoya reliever used out the bullpen, registering the save in all three games, while striking out five in 4.0 shutout innings overall. Offensively,
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk),
Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y. / Fieldston) and
Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) all homered on the weekend.
On Monday, Morreale was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week while Grzebinski was selected to the weekly honor roll.
For the season, McCabe leads the Hoyas with a .312 (49 for 157) batting average and is second with 20 RBIs. Ruedisili leads the Hoyas with eight home runs, 14 doubles, 32 runs scored, 24 RBIs, 13 stolen bases and a .563 slugging percentage. He is also second with two triples and third with a .271 (39 for 144) batting average.
Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) is second on the squad with four home runs while Nelson also has three.
Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) has hit two home runs and is second on the squad with 13 doubles and six stolen bases. As a team, Georgetown is batting .256 and has hit 31 home runs, the program's most since 2010. The pitching staff has a 5.33 team ERA.
UMBC enters the week with a 20-21 overall record and a 6-12 mark in America East play. The Retrievers, who play at La Salle on Tuesday, are led by Terrence Pinkston who is batting .347 (51 for 147) with five home runs, 15 doubles and 27 RBIs. Christian Torres is hitting .320 (49 for 153) and has three home runs and 11 doubles to go along with 35 RBIs. AJ Wright leads UMBC with six home runs and 37 RBIs while tying with Pinkston for the team lead with 15 doubles. As a squad, the Retrievers are batting .263 while the pitching staff owns a 5.96 ERA and opponents are hitting .299 against them with 37 home runs and 91 doubles.
Following Wednesday's game the Hoyas will return to Shirley Povich Field for a three-game BIG EAST series against Creighton over the weekend. First pitch in Friday's series opener is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday's contest will start and 6 p.m. and Sunday's finale will begin at noon.
