WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's tennis team was edged 5-2 by District neighbors, George Washington on Friday morning at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland. After an early deficit, the Colonials battled back and clinched the match 4-1 as Maria Siopacha defeated
Sofie Moenster (Oslo, Norway / Ordrup Gymnasium) 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1.
The Hoyas got out to the early lead in doubles as
Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) and partner
Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) defeated their opponents 6-2 at No. 1 and
Anna Short (Birmingham, Mich. / Cranbrook Kingswood) and
Elena De Santis (Avellino, Italy / Convitto Nazionale P. Colletta) followed suit with a 6-2 victory at No. 2.
In singles, GW notched three-straight wins at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 4 before De Santis put the Hoyas back on the board with a 7-5, 6-0 win against Melis Bayraktaroglu at No. 3. With the Colonials leading 3-2 overall, Siopacha clinched the match for GW against Moenster and tallied their final team point at No. 2.
The Hoyas will face Villanova in a BIG EAST doubleleader along with the men's squad in Villanova, Pennsylvania on Sunday, April 7. The women's match is slated for 1 p.m.
