Hoyas Return to Winning Ways at Providence

Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team earned its first BIG EAST win of the season with a 17-15 victory on the road at Providence on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas improve to 8-3 on the season and 1-2 in league play.

Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville) led the Hoyas with four goals and two assists while Jake Carraway (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) added three goals and two assists, including the game-winning score. Dylan Watson (Guelph, Ontario / The Hill Academy) recorded his first career hat trick while fellow freshman Declan McDermott (Pleasantville, N.Y. / Pleasantville) added two goals and two assists.

Massimo Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y. / IMG Academy) had a goal and two assists, Robert Clark (Cooksville, Md. / McDonogh) had a goal and an assist while Austin McDonald (Olney, Md. / Georgetown Prep), Gibson Smith (Pelham, N.Y. / Pelham Memorial) and Patrick Aslanian (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) each tallied lone goals. Lucas Wittenberg (Kennesaw, Ga. / Harrison / Mercer) was credited with a pair of assists while Zachary Geddes (Winchester, Mass. / Belmont Hill / Phillips Andover) had one assist.

Defensively, Owen McElroy (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood / Avon Old Farms) hauled in 12 saves for the win between the pipes. Geddes led the way with a pair of caused turnovers while Aslanian, Joe LiCalzi (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) and Alex Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y. / Ward Melville) each had one. James Reilly (Berwyn, Pa. / Conestoga) collected a team-high eight ground balls while Smith hauled in five and Carraway had four.

Providence took the initial lead of the game with a 3-0 advantage before the Hoyas got on the board with Aslanian's goal at the 7:06 mark. Another Friar score made it 4-1 before Smith closed out the frame with a coast-to-coast goal off a PC turnover with five seconds remaining to make it 4-2.

Georgetown posted the first two goals of the second quarter courtesy of Bucaro and Carraway to knot things up at 4-4 with 8:33 to play. Providence then closed out the stanza by scoring four of the next five goals to take a 9-5 lead going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Blue & Gray began to mount its comeback and outscored Providence 8-2 in the frame. Watson posted the first of his two extra-man goals on the opening possession while Bucaro added a goal just over four minutes later to pull within a pair, down 9-7. A Providence goal gave the home team a three-goal lead once again, but back-to-back scores from Clark and Bucci pulled GU within one, down 10-9. The Friars added another goal at the 6:29 mark to lead 11-9 before the Hoyas closed out the frame with four unanswered scores to take their first lead of the game with a 13-11 advantage going into the fourth.

Both teams kept pace in the fourth, but Georgetown never relinquished the lead despite a late surge from the Friars. Consecutive goals from Carraway and Bucaro just 49 seconds apart with less than three minutes remaining gave GU the cushion it needed to seal the victory. Four of McElroy's saves came in the final stanza.

Nick Hatzipetrakos led the Friars with five goals and three assists while Tate Boyce collected 15 saves in the loss.

Georgetown closes out a three-game road trek as it travels to face No. 3/2 Loyola on Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in Baltimore.
