WASHINGTON – Georgetown University Field Hockey Head Coach
Christy Longacre has released the schedule for the upcoming 2019 season. The Hoyas, who will take the field in Longacre's second season on the Hilltop, will play seven of their 19 games this fall at Cooper Field.
"I am very excited about this year's 2019 schedule," Longacre said. "We hope to continue to build on last season with adding some new competitive opponents. We have 19 returners and four strong incoming freshmen and I believe this schedule will help our girls compete and that it will challenge us at a high level to prepare us for our BIG EAST games."
To open their season, the Hoyas will take on the Davidson on August 30. However, contrary to last season, the Blue & Gray will open its season against the Wildcats within the friendly confines of Cooper Field. Last fall, GU defeated the Wildcats 1-0 behind a goal from
Sydney Stephenson (Bel Air, Md. / Bryn Mawr School) and a five save shutout from
Ciara Weets (Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock). Georgetown continues its homestand as the Hoyas square off against Appalachian State on September 1, a team they defeated 2-0 early in the 2018 season.
The Hoyas will then take to the road for a game at Longwood on September 6, the first of a four-game trip. Last season, the Blue & Gray was able to fend off the Lancers at Cooper Field in a 2-1 in a shootout victory. The road trip continues as Georgetown travels to Harrisonburg, Virginia to battle James Madison on September 8. The following weekend, the Hoyas will travel to New Jersey to face off against Rider on September 13 before wrapping up their road stint with a trip to Lehigh on September 15, a team they beat 7-1 last year.
Georgetown returns home for its longest homestand of the year, opening BIG EAST play as Villanova travels to the Hilltop for a matchup on September 20. The Blue & Gray will then welcome its next opponent, La Salle, in a nonconference matchup on September 22 at Cooper Field. The Hoyas defeated the Explorers in their meeting last season in Philadelphia by a score of 4-2. The homestand wraps up on September 27 when GU battles BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac.
The Blue & Gray then hit the road again to face American (September 29), BIG EAST opponent Old Dominion (October 4) and William & Mary (October 6). Last season, the Hoyas defeated then No. 16 ODU 2-1 in overtime for arguably one of the biggest wins in program history.
The Hoyas will return to Cooper Field for another BIG EAST matchup against Temple (October 11) before heading back to the road to battle Towson (October 13) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (October 15).
Georgetown then returns home for its final regular season home game on October 18 as the squad welcomes yet another BIG EAST opponent in Liberty for a Senior Day matchup on Cooper Field.
The Hoyas end their regular season on a three-game road trip against BIG EAST rivals Providence (October 25) and UConn (November 1) before taking on Sacred Heart in their regular season finale on November 3, a team they defeated 2-0 on the Hilltop in 2018.
Georgetown is coming off an 11-7 campaign in 2018 and looks to continue its winning ways in 2019.
