WASHINGTON – Recent Georgetown University field hockey alum
Helena Masiello (C'19) has been named a winner of the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award, as announced on Wednesday. The award recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Masiello appeared in 17 games as a senior, making seven starts on the Hoya frontline. She tied for fifth on the team in scoring with nine points on three goals and three assists. She ranked third on the squad in assists and was fourth with 12 shots on goal. Masiello had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 shutout victory over Appalachian State and also added goals against LIU Brooklyn and Villanova. She graduated in May with a degree in classics and a minor in government. Off the field, Masiello was a four-time Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic team honoree as well as a four-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team member.
Georgetown is coming off an 11-7 campaign in 2018 and opens the 2019 season on Aug. 30 at Cooper Field against Davidson.
