Field Hockey Begins BIG EAST Play and Welcomes La Salle to Cooper Field

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University field hockey team (3-3) will be back on Cooper Field this weekend for a pair of games. The Hoyas will take on Villanova (3-1) in the BIG EAST opener on Friday afternoon, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. before welcoming La Salle (3-2) on Sunday, Sept. 22 at noon for a nonconference showdown. Live stats and a live stream will be available for both contests at www.GUHoyas.com.

About The Hoyas

Georgetown enters BIG EAST play at 3-3 after splitting its last two matches on the road. The Hoyas left Rider with a shutout win behind junior Kylee Cunningham's late goal in the second quarter and sophomore Ciara Weets' strong performance in goal. GU struggled to get things going at Lehigh, falling 3-0 to the Mountain Hawks.

Senior Lindsay Getz leads Georgetown with nine points heading into the weekend, while freshman Ellie Maransky sits with five points and junior Cami Osborne jumps into the top three tying senior Michaela Bruno with three points apiece. Weets is holding onto her BIG EAST lead with 39 saves. The Blue & Gray has attempted 63 shots through six games, 40 have been on goal and 10 of those attempts found the back of the cage. Opponents have attempted 73 shots with 49 shots-on-goal against the Hoyas.

Scouting Villanova

Villanova enters Friday's match at 3-1 on the year. The Wildcats finished last season 9-10, going 4-3 in the BIG EAST. This season the Wildcats were picked to finish fifth in the conference preseason polls. Junior midfielder Riley Dolan was also voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team but it's been senior forward Lydia Sydnor leading the way for Villanova. Sydnor leads the BIG EAST with seven goals and 16 points. She was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after scoring four goals in Villanova's Friday night matchup against Wagner and two goals in a 3-2 win against Penn. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan McGinley made the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll with 10 saves total on the week.

The Wildcats edged out the Hoyas 5-2 in their last meeting last season.

Scouting La Salle

The Explorers are 3-2 this season and are fresh off wins against Wagner and LIU, winning 6-0 and 3-2, respectively. Junior Rialee Allen scored a career-high four goals in the win over Wagner and leads the Explorers with nine points while senior forward Lauren Lechleitner's seven points and midfielder Amanda Chapin's four points closes out the top three. Chapin was announced Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week and freshman goalkeeper Chloe South was named Defensive Player of the Week.

La Salle will travel to Towson on Friday afternoon before going head-to-head against GU for the fifth-straight year. Georgetown won the last meeting 3-2 behind two goals from Michaela Bruno. GU is 4-2 all-time when facing La Salle.
