Geiger Joins Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse

WASHINGTON – Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach Katrina Geiger was announced as one of the inaugural athletes to join Athletes Unlimited's third pro sports league which will be women's lacrosse. The new league will be played from July 19 – August 22 following the 2021 World Cup at a site to be determined.

"I am extremely excited to be a part of this new league," said Geiger. "Any opportunity to play the game is exciting, but with the best in the world, that's the dream! I'm really looking forward to getting back out on the field in 2021."

Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse will play a short form, fast paced format consisting of eight-minute quarters, 9v9 gameplay and a 60-second shot clock all housed on an 80yd x 50yd playing field. Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse will be comprised of 56 players that will roster four teams of 14 players each. Play will begin with draws at the beginning of each quarter as well as after every goal.

Geiger is one of 22 athletes that are confirmed to play. She is currently in her second season as an assistant coach with the Hoyas. Katrina Geiger joined the Hoya staff in 2019 from Elon University where she spent one season as an assistant coach.  That season, the Phoenix went 6-12 and 3-3 in the CAA.  Geiger helped coach the CAA Rookie of the Year as well as two Second Team All-CAA honorees.  She worked with both the offense and the goalkeeper to break a single-season record for saves.

Elon was Geiger's first stop after an impressive career at Loyola Maryland University.  A midfielder with the Greyhounds, Geiger played in 73 games and made 58 starts. She finished her career with 34 goals and 29 assists for 63 points while collecting 102 ground balls and 61 draw controls to go with 54 caused turnovers. Along the way, Geiger was named a two-time All-Patriot League Second Team honoree in 2017 and 2018 and served as a team captain in 2016 and 2018. She played in the NCAA Tournament in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

"Women's lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and incredibly popular among young players and fans," said Jon Patricof, CEO and Co-Founder of Athletes Unlimited. "Our leagues are all about excitement, storytelling and fan engagement so lacrosse is the perfect addition to our network of pro sports leagues which already includes softball and indoor volleyball."

Athletes Unlimited leagues will feature a range of innovations to bring athletes and fans a unique and intense version of the sport. Individual athletes earn points based on team wins and individual performance and become the champions in team sports. Points can be earned on every play and the leaderboard changes constantly. Teams will change each week, with the top four athletes in the standings serving as captains and drafting their teams. Athletes Unlimited is revolutionizing the traditional world of pro sports, where top athletes can compete in unprecedented ways, fans get closer to the game than ever before, and games are reinvented into action-packed moments. For the first time, the best players in the world have the opportunity to take control of their careers as the profits go to the players.
