Hoyas Travel to St. John’s for First Road Contest

WASHINGTON – Following a six-game homestand to open the season the Georgetown University men's basketball team will play its first road contest when it travels to Queens, N.Y. for a BIG EAST matchup against St. John's. Tipoff at the Red Storm's Carnesecca Arena is set for 6:30 p.m. It will also be the second-straight matchup for the Hoyas against St. John's as the two teams played this past Sunday at McDonough Arena.

  • Sunday's game can be seen live on FS1 with Dave Sims calling the play-by-play and Sarah Kustok providing analysis.
  • The game can be heard locally on 106.7 The Fan as well as SiriusXM 389 and Radio.com with Rich Chvotkin in his 47th season on the call.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Last time out, Georgetown defeated the Red Storm 97-94 in an overtime thriller at McDonough Arena for GU's first BIG EAST victory of the season.
  • Four Hoyas scored in double figures, led by freshman Dante Harris with 22 points in his first career start. He went 8-of-9 from the free throw line, including hitting three in overtime, and also contributed two assists and three steals.
  • Qudus Wahab narrowly missed out on a triple-double with a career-high 17 points, 10 rebounds and a career-best nine blocked shots. He was 7-of-9 from the floor.
  • Jahvon Blair finished with 20 points, hitting a trio of 3-pointers, to go with five assists, while Donald Carey had 19 points, on 7-of-9 shooting, five rebounds and five assists.
  • The Hoyas shot 54 percent (34-63) from the floor for the game, including hitting 47.8 percent (11-23) of their 3-pointers.
  • Harris was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday, while Jamorko Pickett earned a nod to the weekly honor roll. Harris averaged 12.0 ppg, 1.7 rpg and 2.0 apg in GU's three games last week, while Pickett recorded a pair of double-doubles, shooting 62.1 percent (18-29) from the floor and connected on 55.6 percent (5-9) from beyond the arc.
  • Through six games, Blair leads the Hoyas in scoring with 18.7 ppg, while Pickett is averaging 13.3 ppg and pulling down a league-leading 9.0 rpg.
  • Wahab is also in double figures with 12.2 ppg and is second on the team with an average of 7.8 rpg. He is second in the BIG EAST with 2.8 bpg.
  • The Hoyas lead the BIG EAST in rebounding (43.8 rpg) and are third in rebounding margin (+6.0), blocked shots (5.0 bpg) and 3-pointers made (9.3/game). 

SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
  • St. John's enters Sunday's matchup with a 5-4 overall record, having lost three-straight games to open BIG EAST play. The Red Storm fell to No. 9 Creighton on Thursday.
  • The Red Storm average 81.3 ppg and allow a league-worst 80.0 ppg to opponents. SJU leads the BIG EAST with 10.8 steals per game and 18.8 forced turnovers per game.
  • Julian Champagnie leads the team in both scoring (20.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg).
  • Greg Williams Jr. (11.4 ppg), Vince Cole (11.1 ppg), Isaih Moore (10.2 ppg) and Posh Alexander (10.1 ppg) are also in double figures, while Alexander is averaging 4.3 apg.
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Sunday will be the 118th all-time meeting between the storied BIG EAST rivals with the Red Storm holding a slim 60-57 series advantage. 
  • Georgetown has won four of the last five meetings between the two programs, sweeping the regular season series last year and winning the first matchup of this season on Sunday.
  • In eight career games vs. St. John's, seniors Jahvon Blair and Jamorko Pickett are each averaging 11.3 ppg. Blair is also dishing out 3.3 apg and grabbing 2.0 rpg, while Pickett is pulling down 7.6 rpg and swatting 1.9 bpg.  
  • Patrick Ewing is 6-3 in his coaching career against St. John's after going 8-4 versus the Red Storm as a player.
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Hoyas will play one more game before the holidays, heading back out on the road for a matchup at Seton Hall on Wednesday, December 23. Tipoff at the Prudential Center is set for 5 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FS1.
