No. 17/16 Hoyas Open 2020 Campaign at Lafayette

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse team opens its 2020 season on the road at Lafayette on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Hoyas kick off the campaign ranked No. 17 in the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Coaches Poll and No. 16 in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.

About Georgetown
•    The Hoyas look to win their third-straight season opener.
•    Georgetown was selected to finish third by the league coaches in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll.
•    Gibson Smith was named the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year while Jake Carraway joined him on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
•    Smith garnered Second Team Preseason All-American honors by both the USILA and Inside Lacrosse while Carraway was an Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention Preseason All-American.
•    Despite losing two All-Americans on offense to graduation, the Hoyas still return 58.6 percent of their offense and more than 60 percent of their goal scoring from a year ago.
•    Five different returners scored at least 20 points a year ago, including Carraway's 88 (57G, 31A) to tie GU's single season record.
•    Robert Clark added 46 points (33G, 13A) a year ago, Massimo Bucci (15G, 10A) and Declan McDermott (11G, 14A) both had 25 points and Dylan Watson chipped in 23 points (18G, 5A).
•    The Hoyas also return their entire starting close defense, a unit that allowed just 11.11 goals per game a held opponents to a sub-.300 shot percentage.
•    In goal, Owen McElroy posted a 10-4 record in 2019 with 171 saves and a .517 save percentage.

About Lafayette
•    Lafayette (0-1) opened the season last week with a 16-9 loss at No. 2/1 Penn State.
•    The Nittany Lions led 15-4 after three quarters before the Leopards tallied five goals on PSU's reserves.
•    Six different Lafayette players posted goals, including two each from Andrew Robbins, Ian MacCauley and Nick Jessen.
•    Ryan Ness collected 11 saves between the pipes for the Leopards.

Series History
•    Georgetown and Lafayette have faced each other nine times before with the Hoyas owning a 6-3 all-time mark.
•    Lafayette won the last meeting, an 11-10 overtime victory in 2013.
•    Prior to that loss, the Hoyas had won five-straight dating back to 1991.
•    Georgetown is 4-1 against the Leopards in Easton, Pennsylvania.
