No. 19/19 Hoyas Host Saint Joseph’s in Season Opener on Saturday

WASHINGTON – The No. 19/19 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad will open the 2020 season on Saturday at Cooper Field against the Saint Joseph's University Hawks. The opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas are ranked No. 19 in both the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse Preseason Polls.
  • Senior Katie Hudson was named Third Team Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and was a unanimous BIG EAST selection.
  • Hudson was an IWLCA Second Team All-South Regional honoree a season ago.
  • Georgetown had four players named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad.
  • Hudson and senior Natalia Lynch were both unanimous selections.
  • Lynch missed a portion of last season due to injury, but still managed to rank sixth on the squad in scoring, lead the team in caused turnovers and sit at second in draw controls.
  • Senior Michaela Bruno and junior Mollie Miller also earned a nod.  Both players were All-BIG EAST honorees a season ago.
  • Georgetown earned 21 points from the league's six head coaches as well as one first-place vote to sit in second behind the University of Denver with 25 points and five first-place votes.
  • The Blue & Gray finished the 2019 season with 12 wins as well as a BIG EAST Championship and the first trip to the NCAA Tournament Second Round since 2014.  Georgetown managed back-to-back double overtime victories to capture the league championship and a tournament win before falling to Syracuse 14-8.
  • The squad lost its top three scorers from 2019 as well as its starting goalkeeper.
 
About the Hawks
  • The Hawks were selected third in the 2020 Atlantic-10 Preseason Coaches Poll with 76 points.
  • Midfielder Bridget Cerciello was selected to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Saint Joseph's finished the 2019 campaign with a record of 11-8 and 6-3 in the A-10.
  • The Hawks have reached the semifinals of the A-10 Tournament the past four seasons.
  • SJU graduated two of its top three scorers from a season ago, but will return Stephanie Kelly who scored 39 goals and 37 assists for 76 points in 2019.
 
Series Information
  • The Hoyas are 5-0 all-time against the Hawks and 2-0 at home. 
  • This is the third-consecutive season that Georgetown has began the year against SJU.
  • Last year, GU managed a 12-9 victory on Hawk Hill as a trio of seniors tallied hat tricks for the Blue & Gray.
  • In the last meeting at Cooper Field during the 2018 campaign, Georgetown came came away with the 18-15 win. 
  • In that game, Taylor Gebhardt led the way with four goals, while Bruno added three goals and Emily Ehle posted a goal and a squad-high four assists.
