WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics held the second annual GUSY Awards for its student-athlete this spring, announcing the award winners on Monday, May 11 through social media. The event was originally supposed to be held in Gaston Hall on the Hilltop, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the voting and award winners were announced via Georgetown Athletics' social media platforms.
The GUSYs is an annual celebration of Georgetown student-athletes that includes five awards created by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and voted on by GU athletes, coaches and administrators.
Hoya Pride Award
Mary Pagano – Women's Lacrosse
Wes Bowers - Football
The Hoya Pride award recognizes one female and one male student-athlete who demonstrates enthusiasm, integrity, commitment and pride in being a Georgetown student-athlete and a member of their team. Through their actions, character and example, this individual has made a noticeable presence among their teammates.
Additionally, this is Bowers' second-straight year winning the Hoya Pride Award.
Courage Award
Josiah Laney – Men's Track & Field
Boo Jackson – Women's Soccer
The Courage Award recognizes one male and female student-athlete who has exhibited perseverance and strength in the face of adversity, challenges and/or setbacks, whether physical, academic or personal. This individual is driven, and through their work ethic and passionate dedication to their sport, has inspired and gained the respect of their team.
Team Player Award
Amanda Carolan – Women's Soccer
Jagan Mosely – Men's Basketball
The Team Player Award recognizes one male and one female student-athlete who, through words and actions on and off the playing field, is committed to the good of the team over individual considerations or success. These student-athlete contributes to the best of their ability by selflessly playing whatever role will most help their team.
Lasting Legacy Award
Jake Carraway – Men's Lacrosse
Caroline O'Brien – Women's Rowing
The Lasting Legacy Award recognizes one male and one female departing student-athlete who is a singular role model for their team and Georgetown Athletics. This individual embodies the 150-year old spirit of the Blue & Gray and will leave a lasting impression on their team, Georgetown Athletics, and the Georgetown community.
Outstanding Service to the Community Award
Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country
The Outstanding Service to the Community Award recognizes one sport program which has served the good of a greater community measured by one or more of the following criteria: 1) an exceptional commitment to sustained engagement over time, 2) a dedication to sharing the love of sport through skills-based engagement, 3) an extraordinary team spirit as expressed by a deep collaboration with a community partner.
