WASHINGTON – Georgetown Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Ricky Fried was named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's Racial Equity Task Force last week. The group of 11 coaches was formed to examine ways the association can fight against racism and facilitate the entry of people of color into the sport of lacrosse, and specifically into the collegiate coaching ranks.
The task force's main focus will be on formulating action steps to make the IWLCA a more diverse and inclusive association by:
- Establishing programs that make entry into the collegiate women's coaching ranks more accessible to the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) community and that support, mentor, and retains those coaches
- Sponsoring and promoting professional development/continuing education initiatives focusing on anti-racism, eliminating disparities that marginalize underrepresented populations, and encouraging an understanding of unconscious bias and inherent privilege
- Creating policies and procedures to ensure equitable access to leadership roles in the association and providing spaces for association, affirmation and connection among all members of the association
The task force's secondary focus will be on working with other lacrosse organizations to make the sport of lacrosse more diverse and inclusive at the grassroots level and remove barriers that deter continued participation in the game. At least one open meeting will be held to allow internal and external stakeholders to share their personal experiences and exchange ideas for making the sport more accessible and welcoming to minority participants.
Fried has been the head coach at Georgetown for 16 seasons. He is active in the IWLCA and is the organization's vice president, on the board of directors and on a tournament working group after previously serving on the ethics committee. Currently, he is the chair of the Regional All-American Committee and is a member of the Tewaaraton Trophy Committee. Recently, he won the Diane Geppi-Aikens Memorial Award recognizing lifetime achievement to the game of women's lacrosse.
After serving as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women's Lacrosse Elite Team for three years, Fried was named the head coach of the national team in August 2009. He held the position until fall 2017.
