Hoyas Outlast Villanova 8-7 to Complete Regular Season Sweep

WASHINGTON – Freshman short-stick defensive midfielder Jack Leary scored his first career goal with 1:16 remaining to lift the No. 10/11 Georgetown University men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over visiting Villanova on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas improve to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the BIG EAST while the Wildcats fall to 3-2 overall and in league play.
 
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • TJ Haley continued his impressive rookie campaign with a goal and three assists to lead the Hoyas.
  • Graham Bundy Jr. and Colin Munro both added a pair of goals while Nicky Petkevich chipped in a goal and an assist.
  • Declan McDermott bookended Leary's game-winner, scoring the first goal of the game in the opening quarter.
  • Defensively, the Hoyas held their fifth opponent of the season to fewer than 10 goals and Villanova had just 18 shots on target all day.
  • Georetown's stout defense was credited with 10 caused turnovers on the day with Will Tominovich earning three to go with a team-high four ground balls.
  • In goal, Owen McElroy collected 11 saves between the pipes.
  • A battle at the 'X' all day, the Hoyas won 10-of-19 faceoffs with Carson Milburn going 5-for-8 (.625).
 
VILLANOVA NOTES
  • Keegan Khan led the Wildcats with two goals and two assists while five other VU players posted a lone goal.
  • Justin Coppola went 9-for-19 on faceoffs and hauled in a game-high seven ground balls.
  • In goal, Will Vitton collected 15 saves and had five ground balls as the Hoyas peppered the goalie with 51 shots on the day.
 
OF NOTE
  • The Hoyas complete the regular season sweep over Villanova following a 16-1 win in the season opener on the Main Line.
  • Leary grew up less than a mile from Villanova's campus in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
  • Haley's three assists give him 27 in seven games, giving him the Georgetown freshman record for assists in a season.
  • McElroy's 11 saves give him 290 for his career, tying him with Jake Haley for 12th place all-time on the Hilltop. Jake Haley and TJ Haley are cousins.
