WASHINGTON – Led by an NCAA top-three performance from freshman
Parker Stokes' 8:38.55 in the 3000-meter steeplechase, the Georgetown men's and women's track & field program continued its dominant season in the middle-distance and distance events.
Friday (4/16) Recap:
- The efforts of Stokes and Jantz Tostenson in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, Sami Corman in the women's 1500-meter run, Charlotte Dannatt in the women's 10,000-meter run, and the duo of Robert Brandt and Jack Salisbury in the men's 5000-meter run stood out.
- Stokes, who last week set a personal best of 3:43.05 over 1500 meters, made his collegiate steeplechase debut in impressive fashion.
- An honest early pace set by Nick Steele of Villanova and Alex Rogers of the Reebok Boston Track Club allowed the freshman to settle in and use his closing speed over the last 600 meters to secure the No. 3 time in the NCAA and No. 4 all-time at Georgetown.
- Not to be outdone, fellow freshman Tostenson, in the first steeplechase of his career, finished fourth overall in 8:49.44 ranking him No. 10 in school history.
- Brandt and Salisbury finished a close second (13:35.50) and strong seventh (13:50.98), respectively, in the men's 5000-meter run, and freshman Shea Welibaker set a personal best of 14:19.26.
- Representing Georgetown for the first time, junior Charlotte Dannatt made her debut at 10000 meters (34:02.44), finishing seventh overall and 10th all-time in the record book.
- The British international joined the Hoyas after being crowned the 2020 British Senior Champion in cross country and, with what will likely be an NCAA First Round qualifier out of the gate, she will now set her sights on those Championships in late May.
- In the women's 1500-meter run, Corman finished in 4:19.91 just off her personal best of 4:18.27 set at the Joe Walker Invitational at Ole Miss last week.
- Maggie Donahue, following her 15:53.11 debut in the 5000-meter run at the Raleigh Relays, dropped down in distance and set a personal best of 4:24.26.
- Tamiya Roberts set a lifetime best in the women's 100-meter dash, running 12.14.
- Mary Hennelly finished 10th (10:33.74) in the women's steeplechase, the second fastest time of her career.
Saturday (4/17) Recap:
- In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Malachi Quarles continued his breakout season finishing third overall in 14.51. The Indiana native won the George Mason Spring Invitational (14.49) less than one week prior to his performance in Charlottesville and returned to the track with the second-fastest mark of his career.
- Matthew Payamps returned to race the 800-meter run and won the men's competition in commanding fashion, clocking a lifetime best of 1:48.81; in a field that included Virginia Tech All-American Diego Zarate, the young freshman catapulted off the final turn to take the lead and secured the win.
- Just two weeks ago, Payamps set his now-previous personal best at the Virginia Invitational running 1:49.63 and ran 3:43.06 for the 1500-meter run at the Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Mississippi.
- Ethan Delgado set a personal best of 1:50.44 to win section four of the 800-meter event.
- In the women's 800-meter run, Cathilyn McIntosh returned to action and won section five in 2:06.31.
- Doubling back from the 1500-meter run, Sami Corman trailed closely behind McIntosh and clocked a personal best of 2:06.91. The pair finished seventh and 13th overall, respectively.
DIRECTOR OF CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD ALTON MCKENZIE ON THE VIRGINIA CHALLENGE:
"With this being our four consecutive weekend of competition, I'm pleased with our continued high level of competitiveness. Of note would be our middle distance runners; on the men's side, with Matt Payamps' win and new PB of 1:48.41 this weekend––off
Theo Woods running 1:48.21 last week––we've now had four runners under 1:50 and another four around 1:51. On the women's side we've also seen Cathi McIntosh––at 800 meters–– and
Sami Corman continue their consistency; leading a group of five women who've run 2:10 or faster. Also, two steeplechasers under 8:50 at the 3K, and with Parker's 8:38 currently third in the NCAA and Jantz with a 8:49 as a first timer in the event, gives us some versatility across other events which is worth noting.
Robert Brandt continues to show a level of consistency as one of the best distance runners in the country across multiple events.
Overall as a program, we're grateful for another successful weekend of competition, and look forward to having a weekend off before concluding the regular season schedule in two weeks. We will have a bout of good training and have some folks recoup from injuries/setbacks before heading into the Conference Championships in mid May."
HEAD MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY/ASSISTANT TRACK & FIELD COACH BRANDON BONSEY ON THE MEN'S STEEPLECHASE:
"Great steeple debuts from Parker and Jantz. Parker was a two-time national champion in the 2000-meter steeplechase in high school so this wasn't a surprise, but this was Jantz's first ever steeple. The exciting part is they can both run a lot faster. Parker closed in 62 seconds (over the last 400 meters) and Jantz wasn't sure what to expect in his debut. I'm excited for both of them to run the event again in a month at the BIG EAST Championships."
UP NEXT:
Georgetown will return to action on April 30 at the Virginia Grand Prix and conclude the regular season schedule.
