Georgetown to Face St. John’s at Madison Square Garden

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team (6-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) will head to Madison Square Garden to square off against St. John's on Sunday, January 16. Tipoff at the world's most famous arena is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

  • Sunday's game will be broadcast live on FOX with Tim Brando calling the play-by-play and Jim Jackson providing analysis.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas are coming off a 72-58 setback against Butler on Thursday evening at Capital One Arena.
  • Tyler Beard finished with a team-high 15 points, a game-high five assists, four rebounds and a steal.
  • Collin Holloway scored 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor and 4-of-5 from the line.
  • Timothy Ighoefe returned after missing the last six games, pulling down a game-high nine boards in nearly 16 minutes of work.
  • Aminu Mohammed leads the BE and ranks fifth among all NCAA freshmen with five double-doubles. The Hoya freshman also sits second in the conference with 8.3 rpg (6th - NCAA freshmen).
  • As a team, GU paces the BE shooting 36.9 percent from distance while pulling down a second-best 40.7 rpg (22nd - NCAA).
  • The Blue & Gray has four players ranked among the BIG EAST top 20 in scoring as Mohammed leads the way with 13.8 ppg (11th), followed by Rice (13.0 ppg, T-16th), Harris (13.0 ppg, T-16th) and Donald Carey (12.8 ppg, 19th).
  • Donald Carey remains one of the top free throw shooters in Division I, making 93.9 percent (5th - NCAA) to also pace the BE.
 
ABOUT THE RED STORM
  • St. John's enters Sunday's contest having lost two straight to No. 16/17 Providence (83-73) and UConn in overtime (86-78).
  • Julian Champagnie paces the BIG EAST with 21.2 ppg (8th - NCAA) while leading the Johnnies with 7.5 rpg, three double-doubles and a 40.7 shooting percentage from distance (2nd - BE).
  • Posh Alexander leads the Red Storm with 4.9 assists and 2.4 steals per contest (1st - BE).
  • As a team, St. John's sits first in the conference with 82.1 ppg, 18.7 apg, 9.7 spg and 17.6 turnovers forced per game while ranking last in free throw percentage (66.9%).
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Sunday will be the 119th all-time meeting between GU and St. John's with the Johnnies holding the slight 61-57 edge overall.
  • In BIG EAST regular season action, the Hoyas boast a 46-36 record over the team from Queens.
  • Georgetown has won four of its last six contests against the Red Storm, including a 97-94 overtime win at McDonough Arena on Dec. 13, 2021. Dante Harris broke out for a career-high 22 points and three steals in 43 minutes of action. Jahvon Blair added 20 points and five assists while Carey scored 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, including a pair of triples and two made free throws. The trio went 7-for-8 from the charity stripe in the extra period to knock off St. John's. As a team, GU shot 54.0 percent from the field (34-64) while the Johnnies hit 43.2 percent of their shots (33-76).
  • Head Coach Patrick Ewing holds a 6-4 record against SJU as a coach since taking over in 2017 and went 8-4 as a player.
