Hoyas to Open 2022-23 Campaign Against Coppin State

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown men's basketball team will open the 2022-23 season against Coppin State on Tuesday evening with tipoff slated for 8:30 p.m. at Capital One Arena.

  • Tuesday's matchup can be seen live on FS1 with Scott Graham calling the play-by-play and Tarik Turner providing analysis.
  • The game will be broadcasted locally on The Team 980 as well as on SiriusXM 381 and the XM App 971 with Rich Chvotkin on the call for his 49th season.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Blue & Gray brought in a plethora of new faces and talent to the Hilltop for the 2022-23 season, featuring several transfers, a pair of freshmen and a new look coaching staff led by Head Coach Patrick Ewing, who enters his sixth season.
  • Sophomore guard Brandon Murray, who was ranked a top-10 transfer this season comes to the Hilltop after averaging double figures (10.0 ppg) in the SEC last season with LSU. He was also ranked as a four-star recruit out of high school by 247sports.
  • Qudus Wahab returns to the Hilltop for the 2022-23 campaign, bringing back veteran experience and was a part of the 2021  BIG EAST Tournament Championship team. In his two seasons with GU, the Hoya center averaged 8.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg in 58 games.
  • Primo Spears is expected to be a scoring presence for the Hoyas, finishing his 2021-22 season with a pair of 30-point performances and posting 12.7 ppg in 30 appearances with Duquesne.
  • Akok Akok joined Georgetown after appearing in 23 games and averaging 3.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game with BIG EAST foe UConn last season.
  • The Blue & Gray welcomed freshmen Denver Anglin and D'Ante Bass for the upcoming season. Anglin spent his high school career at Gill St. Bernard's where he scored 1,227 points in 84 games. Bass averaged 13.3 ppg and 7.0 rpg his senior season at Windsor Forest, leading his team to the 2022 Georgia High School Association Class 3A State Basketball Championship and recording 22 points and 10 boards.
  • Jay Heath comes to the Hilltop after spending last season with Arizona State, averaging 10.6 ppg in 28 games with 17 starts.
  • Rounding out the Hoya lineup are returners Wayne Bristol Jr., Victor Muresan, Ryan Mutombo and Jordan Riley and fellow newcomers Bradley Ezewiro and Bryson Mozone.
 
ABOUT THE EAGLES
  • Coppin State opened the 2022-23 season with an 82-59 loss at Charlotte. Sam Sessoms led the team with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including a pair of triples in 28 minutes of action. The Eagles shot 40.7% from the floor but allowed 50.0% shooting from the 49ers. 
  • Coppin State went 9-23 overall In 2021-22 while shooting 38.6% from the field and 29.7% from behind the arc.
  • Nendah Tarke was named to the MEAC Preseason First Team last season which saw him lead the nation in steals per game (2.94). He ranked second in total steals with 94, which was a CSU single-season record, and averaged 13.4 ppg and 6.8 rpg.
  • Head Coach Juan Dixon enters his sixth season at the helm of the Eagles and most recently saw Tarke's older brother, Anthony, get signed by the Detroit Pistons. The former Washington Wizard also played under GU Head Coach Patrick Ewing in his rookie season (2002-03).
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Tuesday's matchup will be just the fourth showdown between these two programs with GU leading the all-time series 3-0.
  • The Hoyas downed the Eagles 80-48 in 2020 when they came to the District. Former Georgetown standouts Jahvon Blair and Jamorko Pickett combined for 41 points with Pickett posting a double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds at McDonough Arena.
