Eleventh-Seeded Hoyas to Face Sixth-Seeded Pirates in BIG EAST First Round

WASHINGTON – The 11th-seeded Georgetown University men's basketball team heads to New York to compete in the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP. The Hoyas face the sixth-seeded Seton Hall University Pirates (20-9) at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, March 9. Tipoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
 
FOLLOW THE HOYAS
  • Wednesday's game will be broadcast live on FS1 with Tim Brando calling the play-by-play, Bill Raftery providing analysis and Kristina Pink providing sideline reporting.
  • The game can be heard on 99.1 and Radio.com with Rich Chvotkin in his 48th season on the call.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas (6-24) are coming off a 97-75 setback against Xavier (18-12, 8-11 BE) on Saturday. Dante Harris paced three Hoyas in double figures with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor (3-6 3FG).
  • Collin Holloway registered 17 points, shooting 75.0% (6-8) from the field to go with four boards and a pair of steals. Aminu Mohammed logged his 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 16 rebounds while tallying eight offensive boards.
  • Donald Carey captured the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award for his outstanding leadership and sportsmanlike mentality on the court while Mohammed was unanimously selected to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team as announced by the league.
  • The Blue & Gray finished the regular season with four players averaging double figures: Mohammed (13.8 ppg), Carey (13.6 ppg), Harris (12.3 ppg) and Kaiden Rice (11.2 ppg).
  • In conference play, Carey averaged 14.2 ppg, followed by Mohammed (13.3 ppg) and Harris (12 ppg).
 
ABOUT THE PIRATES
  • Seton Hall has won its last five matchups, including a tight 73-68 victory over the Hoyas on March 2. The Pirates have also defeated DePaul, Butler, Xavier and Creighton during their streak.
  • In the regular season, Jared Rhoden led the Pirates in scoring with 16.2 ppg and added 6.9 rpg, earning an All-BIG EAST First Team selection on Sunday. Alexis Yetna grabs a team-best 7.7 rpg for Seton Hall.
  • Seton Hall ranks second in the BIG EAST with 39.3 rpg and a +4.4 rebound margin, trailing only UConn (+7.5).
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Wednesday will be the 116th meeting between the two programs with the Hoyas holding a 61-54 advantage.
  • The Pirates have captured three of the last five matchups but the Blue & Gray won the last meeting between the squads in postseason play with a 66-58 victory in the 2021 BIG EAST Semifinals.
  • Head Coach Patrick Ewing is 4-8 against SHU all-time as a coach and stands at an even 1-1 in postseason play against the Pirates.
 
HOYAS IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
  • Georgetown holds a 57-34 overall record in BIG EAST Tournament play. The reigning BIG EAST champions, the Hoyas won a record-breaking eighth BIG EAST Tournament title in 2021 as the team, voted preseason No. 11 in the coaches poll and earning the eighth seed in the tournament, won four games in four days, toppling second-seeded Creighton 73-48 in the finals.
  • The Hoyas are seeded 11th in the tournament, a first for the program, and holds a 4-6 record against sixth-seeded teams.
  • In first round games, Georgetown is 10-6 all-time and 1-2 under Head Coach Patrick Ewing (2021, 2020, 2018).
  • The 2021 title saw Ewing become the first person to win the BIG EAST Tournament title as both a player and coach.
