WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's second-ranked men's lacrosse team welcomes its oldest rival to the Hilltop on Tuesday as it hosts Loyola Maryland in the nonconference finale. The showdown between the two programs, separated by just 52 miles, will be the 44th meeting since Georgetown's inaugural season in 1970.
About Georgetown
- The Hoyas are 10-1 overall and are coming off a 20-10 victory over Marquette to clinch a postseason berth in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP.
- Against the Golden Eagles, faceoff specialist James Reilly set the program record for career ground balls with 347 following a 17-for-31 (.548) showing at the 'X' with nine ground balls, Dylan Watson became just the 10th Hoya in program history to reach 100 career goals and Owen McElroy became just the seventh player to reach 500 career saves.
- Watson paced the Hoyas with five goals and an assist, Connor Morin added four goals and an assist and Dylan Hess scored three times.
- TJ Haley dished out five assists to tie Daniel Bucaro ('19) for sixth-place all time with 73 in just his second season on the Hilltop.
- Defensively, the Hoyas were credited with 22 caused turnovers. Will Bowen had four to go with five ground balls and was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.
- In goal, McElroy made his first start after missing the last three games for the Hoyas. He collected 11 saves against nine goals allowed in just shy of 50 minutes of action between the pipes.
- On the season, Watson paces the Hoyas with 45 points (41G, 4A) while Graham Bundy Jr. (28G, 15A) and Alex Trippi (21G, 18A) are hot on his trail with 43 and 39, respectively. Haley has 27 points (3G, 24A), Connor Morin has 26 (18G, 8A), Declan McDermott chips in 24 points (18G, 6A) and Hess (11G, 3A) has 14 to round out the Hoyas in double digits.
- Reilly has won 163 of 255 (.639) faceoffs on the year and leads the Hoyas with 94 ground balls. He is just three faceoffs wins away from tying three-time All-American Andy Corno's ('05) program record.
- Will Bowen has been credited with 22 caused turnovers so far this season while Mazzone has 15 and Gibson Smith has 13.
- In goal, McElroy has been a brick wall, posting an 8.59 goals-against average to go with 101 saves and a .620 save percentage. His GAA and save percentage are both second-best in the nation.
Scouting Loyola
- The Greyhounds are 5-6 on the season and are coming off of a 14-9 loss to then-No. 16 Boston University on Saturday.
- Aidan Olmstead leads Loyola with 43 points (17G, 26A) while Kevin Lindley adds 29 points (26G, 3A), Adam Poitras chips in 25 (19G, 6A) and both Evan James and Joey Kamish have 24 points off of 17 goals and seven assists each.
- Bailey Savio is Loyola's top faceoff man, winning .553 (141-255) on the season.
- Defensively, Payton Rezanka has been credited with 23 caused turnovers and adds 23 ground balls.
- In goal, Sam Schafer has started all nine games between the pipes and has an 11.62 GAA to go with 84 saves and a .472 save percentage.
Series History
- The Hoyas and Loyola have the longest running rivalry on the Hilltop for men's lacrosse, having played 43 times dating back to 1970.
- Although the all-time record skews in the Greyhounds favor, 36-7, the hotly contested rivalry can be counted on for close games almost every outing.
- In the last 10 meetings, only two have been decided by more than three goals while four of them have been one-goal affairs.
- Loyola has won the last five in the series following Georgetown's 13-12 win in Baltimore in 2015. Prior to that, the Hoyas last defeated the Greyhounds in 2007.
- Notably, Georgetown and Loyola played in the longest game ever for the Hoyas, a 6-5 loss in four overtimes in the District back in 2011.
