Box Score WASHINGTON – Georgetown University won its fourth consecutive BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Championship, Presented by JEEP with a 14-12 victory over Villanova on Saturday. The second-ranked Hoyas earn the league's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament and will make their 15th NCAA postseason appearance in program history.
Hoya Highlights
- Georgetown improves to 15-1 overall on the season.
- Graham Bundy Jr. was named the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player while Will Bowen, Owen McElroy and Gibson Smith IV joined him on the All-Tournament Team.
- Bundy led the Hoyas with three goals and an assist while TJ Haley added three goals.
- Declan McDermott, Connor Morin and Alex Trippi each had two goals while Dylan Watson added another.
- James Reilly went 15 for 30 (.500) on faceoffs to go with nine ground balls and posted a goal to go with two assists
- Defensively, Smith was credited with three caused turnovers and collected six ground balls while Bowen added another pair of CTs.
- Will Godine, Wallace Halpert, Alex Mazzone, McElroy and Watson all had four ground balls as well.
- In goal, McElroy tied his BIG EAST Championship record from 2021 with 17 saves for his 12th win between the pipes this season.
Villanova Notes
- The Wildcats fall to 9-6 overall.
- Brett Baskin led Villanova with four goals while Matt Campbell added three goals and two assists.
- Patrick Daly and Luke Keating both had two goals while J.P. Basile tallied a goal and an assist.
- Justin Coppola went 15 for 30 (.500) on faceoffs and collected seven ground balls.
- In goal, Will Vitton matched McElroy's 17 saves on the night.
How it Happened
- Georgetown won the opening faceoff and scored six seconds into the game. Villanova responded by taking advantage of a Hoya penalty for a man-up goal just 33 second later to knot things up at 1-1.
- The Hoyas then went on a 7-0 run over the next 28:25 to lead 8-1 before the Wildcats salvaged an 8-3 score going into halftime courtesy of two goals in the final minute of the second frame.
- Coming out of the break, both teams matched each other goal for goal with four apiece in the third to make it a 12-7 GU advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
- Georgetown held VU at bay the majority of the final frame as Bundy notched the hat trick with a goal at the 5:20 mark to lead 14-9.
- Not backing down, Villanova put on a furious onslaught down the stretch and scored three goals in the final 2:31 before Reilly cleanly won the final faceoff of the game to seal the championship for the Hoyas.
