Hoyas Draw Season Opener in State College

Box Score WASHINGTON – The No. 19 Georgetown women's soccer team tied No. 14 Penn State in its season opener on Thursday evening. The Hoyas, who traveled to College Station to play the Nittany Lions, posted up two goals to match PSU's two with the game ending at the 90th minute after the new NCAA overtime rules.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"I'm very proud of the girls' performance tonight. This Penn State team is many peoples' pick for a Final Four and a run at a national championship. I have to give our kids all the credit; we're still learning about ourselves. We have four freshmen who started tonight and three other newcomers who played so we are still putting the pieces together. I thought defensively it helped that we looked good. Any time we attacked in transition we caught them, scoring two great goals and possibly could have had one or two more. Overall, I don't think we could argue the result and Penn State had a couple of great moments.

I have to give my goalkeeper freshman Cara Martin all the credit in the world for standing up and making some great saves. It's a big occasion as a freshman to come play in these types of games and she was excellent.

We learned a lot about our team. We have played through exhibitions that weren't really at this level and I wanted to see what we could do when we were asked questions from a better team. I think we answered some questions tonight and got a good chance to get better. We can do some good stuff this year if we keep bringing the same kind of effort the girls brought tonight."

About the Win
  • Georgetown's first goal came in the 19th minute from freshman Henley Tippins. Senior Gia Vicari found Tippins who had a cross-body shot with her right foot to find the lower left corner of the net to put the Hoyas up 1-0.
  • Penn State leveled the score in the 36th minute from a penalty kick taken by redshirt senior Ally Schlegel who slotted it to the lower left of the goal.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Cara Martin put up multiple saves from the net in her collegiate debut.
  • The Hoyas started the second half strong as Vicari found herself on the ball again and slotted the ball past the Nittany Lion goalkeeper (2-1).
  • In the 70th minute, PSU's Amelia White found Rachel Wasserman up top who was able to slip a ball past Martin to even the score for the second time during the match.
  • With 20 minutes left, both sides saw chances on goal but neither were successful and the game closed out 2-2.
