WASHINGTON – With less than three weeks until the 2022 season kicks off on the road against Marist on September 3, GUHoyas.com will take an in-depth look at each position with this edition featuring the team's running backs.
"From an athletic standpoint, we have a solid group," new Assistant Coach
Kenneth Tinsley said. "There are no goals on how many touchdowns or how many yards we are going to run per game, we just want to win."
The Hoyas bring back two leaders in graduate student
Herman Moultrie III and senior
Joshua Stakely, while adding junior
Shane Stewart and freshman Mason Grudger to the mix.
"I expected those two [Moultrie III & Stakely] to lead by example," Tinsley said. "Stakely is a very athletic kid, especially for someone of his size. He can run and catch the ball and has a very high ceiling. I think Herman can do the same and we will find ways to use both guys and put us in a position to win."
Moultrie and Stakely combined for 475 yards on the ground and seven rushing touchdowns. The duo has also accumulated 43 career games for the Hoyas, managing 430 rushes for 1,616 yards.
Newcomer Gudger "is a fast guy and gives us some speed," and can counter the size of Moultrie and Stakely while Stewart "has made great strides to be a valuable asset in the backfield" after making the transition from defensive back to running back this season.
"I think we have a competitive group and I feel good about what we can do," Tinsley said. "It takes 11 guys on our side of the ball to help get a win and we need to do our part."
