Georgetown Faces St. John’s at Madison Square Garden

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team travels to New York City to take on the St. John's University Red Storm on Sunday, January 29. Tipoff at Madison Square Garden is slated for 2 p.m. The Hoyas are coming off a 81-76 win over DePaul on Tuesday evening while the Johnnies are coming off a 104-76 loss to Creighton on Wednesday evening.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas enter Sunday's matchup with a 6-15 record and a 1-9 mark in BIG EAST play after picking up their first conference win against DePaul on Tuesday.
  • Primo Spears led the Blue & Gray with 21 points while also chipping in four rebounds and six assists.
  • Brandon Murray and Akok Akok both recorded 12 points while Murray added two rebounds, five assists, and four steals and Akok chipped in six rebounds, one assists and four blocks.
  • Qudus Wahab grabbed a squad-best 10 rebounds and was one point shy of a double-double with nine points.
  • Spears' 16.8 ppg leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures, followed by Brandon Murray (14.5 ppg), Jay Heath (13.4 ppg) and Wahab (10.0 ppg).
  • On the glass, Qudus Wahab leads the team with 7.4 rpg while Akok Akok chips in 6.9 rpg.
  • Spears paces the offense with 5.5 apg, good enough for second in the BIG EAST Conference. Akok's team-leading 2.0 bpg is tied for fourth in the league.
 
ABOUT THE RED STORM
  • St. John's (13-8, 3-7 BIG EAST) is coming off a 104-76 loss at Creighton on Wednesday evening.
  • Freshman AJ Storr led the Red Storm with a career-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shot attempts, including three 3-pointers, to lead four Johnnies in double-figures. Senior Joel Soriano finished with 18 points, marking his 12th-consecutive contest in double digits, while also grabbing a team-high nine boards. Juniors David Jones and Dylan Addae-Wusu added 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
  • Soriano leads three Johnnies averaging double figures scoring 16.5 ppg while Jones adds in 12.6 ppg, followed by Andre Curbelo with 10.0 ppg.
  • Soriano was recently selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List presented by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Soriano is one of 50 players nationwide and among only five players in the BIG EAST to earn a spot on the watch list for the honor awarded to the top player in college basketball.
  • Soriano averages a BIG EAST leading 12.1 rpg, including a conference-best 4.2 offensive rebounds per game. Soriano's rebounding average is good for third in the nation.
  • Mike Anderson is in his fourth season as Head Coach of St. John's.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
  • Sunday's matchup will be the 121st all-time between the two sides dating back to 1909. The Red Storm leads the series 63-57.
  • In their last contest, the Hoyas fell to the Red Storm 90-77 on February 3, 2022 at McDonough Arena. Donald Carey recorded 23 points on 7-for-14 shooting from the floor and three triples. Kaiden Rice added 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, 5-of-10 from distance and a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.
