Eleventh-Seeded Hoyas Face Sixth-Seeded Villanova in BIG EAST Tournament First Round

NEW YORK – The Georgetown University men's basketball team is in New York City to take on sixth-seeded Villanova in the first round of the 2023 BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. at Madison Square Garden. The 11th-seeded Hoyas are coming off a 99-59 loss to then-No. RV/23 Creighton on Wednesday evening in Omaha while Villanova is coming off a 71-59 loss to then-No. 14/18 UConn in the regular season finale.

  • Wednesday's matchup can be seen live on FS1 with Tim Brando calling the play-by-play, Bill Raftery providing analysis and Kristina Pink courtside.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas enter Wednesday's game with a regular season record of 7-24 and a 2-18 mark in BIG EAST play after falling to then-No. RV/23 Creighton on Wednesday in the regular season finale. For the second-consecutive game Primo Spears led the Hoyas in scoring with 21 points. He tallied a squad-best four assists. Bryson Mozone added 13 points off the bench with a 5-for-9 effort from the floor. Qudus Wahab was GU's leader on the glass, pulling down eight rebounds while chipping in eight points.
  • Spears' 15.9 ppg leads a trio of Hoyas averaging double figures, followed by Brandon Murray (13.9 ppg) and Jay Heath (12.5 ppg).
  • On the glass, Wahab leads the team with 7.4 rpg while Akok Akok chips in 6.2 rpg.
  • Spears paces the offense with 5.2 apg, which ranks second in the BIG EAST. Akok's team-leading 2.0 bpg is also good for second in the league.
 
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
  • Villanova (16-15, 10-10 BE) is coming off a 71-59 loss to then-No. 14/18 UConn in the regular season finale on Saturday.
  • Two Wildcats finished in double figures in Justin Moore (17) and Cam Whitmore (14). Caleb Daniels led the team on the glass with seven boards and dished out a squad-best three assists.
  • Whitmore added a team-best three steals while chipping in five boards and one assist as well.
  • Eric Dixon leads a quartet of Wildcats in double figures with 15.7 ppg, followed by Daniels (14.6), Moore (13.6) and Whitmore (12.6).
  • Dixon leads the way on the glass with 6.4 rpg. Since returning to the lineup, Moore paces the offense with 2.9 apg with assistance from Daniels' 2.5 apg.
  • Head Coach Kyle Neptune is in his first season at the helm of the Wildcats.
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Wednesday's matchup will be the 94th all-time meeting between the two programs dating back to 1921 with the Hoyas trailing the series 48-45.
  • In their last contest earlier this year, the Hoyas fell 77-73 at Finneran Pavilion. Spears led the Hoyas in scoring with 19 points and paced the offense with seven assists. Jordan Riley chipped in 18 points while also contributing six boards. Murray rounded out the trio in double figures with 10 points.
  • The Hoyas are 6-1 against Villanova all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament. In its last tournament  meeting, #8 Georgetown defeated #1 Villanova 72-71 en route to its league-leading eighth BIG EAST Tournament title in 2021. The Hoyas were a perfect 23-of-23 from the free throw line for the game, setting a BIG EAST Tournament record.
  • The lone loss to the Wildcats in the BET was in 2016 when the #8 Hoyas fell 81-67 to the #1 Wildcats. Villanova went on to win the NCAA championship later that year.
  • The only other meeting with Villanova in a BIG EAST First Round resulted in the #5 Hoyas defeating #4 Villanova 46-41 in 2003.
