WASHINGTON – Former Georgetown University standout Brodie Merrill (C'05) was announced as one of the eight newest inductees to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Thursday. Merrill is the second Hoya in as many seasons to be enshrined in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, joining fellow defensive stalwart Kyle Sweeney (B'03) from a year ago.
Merrill's name is synonymous with success and longevity as one of the greatest defensive players in the sport's history. A two-time USILA First Team All-American at Georgetown in 2004 and 2005, Merrill was also a two-time Tewaaraton Award Finalist and was honored with the 2005 William C. Schmeisser Award as the Most Outstanding Defenseman in college lacrosse. The 2005 ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, Merrill was a First Team All-ECAC selection in 2004 and 2005 as well.
With 280 career ground balls on the Hilltop, Merrill has collected the most for any non-faceoff specialist in program history. He is one of just two non-FOGO Hoyas to collect 100 ground balls in a season, and the first to do so in 2005 with 104. Merrill's teams at Georgetown won a combined 44 games in four seasons, won two ECAC Championships and reach the NCAA Quarterfinals all four years.
Following his time on the Hilltop, Merrill played 18 seasons combined in Major League Lacrosse and the Premier Lacrosse League while playing 20 seasons in the National Lacrosse League following a brief return from his 2023 retirement. He finished his field lacrosse career tied for the most ground balls ever with 1,120 and added another near 3,000 loose balls in NLL play for the most all-time as well. Merrill's 200 games played in field lacrosse is the most all-time and he became the sport's highest scoring long pole with 146 points (51G, 87A, 4T). The PLL's LSM positional award is named after Merrill as well.
A 10-time MLL All-Star, Merrill was the 2005 MLL Rookie of the Year and a six-time Defensive Player of the Year from 2006-11. Merrill won three MLL titles with the Baltimore Bayhawks, Rochester Rattlers and Toronto Nationals. In the NLL, he was the 2006 Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year while earning nine NLL All-Pro selections and being a three-time NLL Transition Player of the Year.
In international play, Merrill won two FIL World Field Lacrosse Championships with Team Canada as well as a pair of silver medals. He was also a four-time gold medalist with Team Canada at the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships.
Merrill is the second Georgetown men's lacrosse player to earn enshrinement in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, joining Sweeney from the Class of 2023. Sheehan Stanwick Burch was inducted with the Class of 2021 from the women's program. Additionally, Dave Urick, Merrill's legendary head coach during his time at Georgetown, was inducted in 1998.
