Georgetown Advances to the Second Round of NCAA Championships with a 3-0 Victory over Fairfield

Box Score WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's soccer team defeated the Fairfield Stags 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field in the first round of the NCAA Championships. With the win, GU will head to the UCLA pod to face the Iowa Hawkeyes in the second round of the tournament.

Head Coach Dave Nolan
"I think the most important thing today was the result, these games are do or die and there is always pressure to win the game. Overall, I was very happy with the first half performance I thought we were very good. We got a good goal from Maja Lardner and a great goal from Jocelyn Lohmeyer and I thought going into the half with the score 2-0 we were very comfortable and I honestly thought in the second half we would come out and kind of do more of the same.

The second half was a little disappointing, I don't think we played our best or really got control of the game as we had some chances but not the way I would have wanted in terms of controlling the game. I can't be too hard on the girls, it is win and move on and we are excited to head to UCLA to face the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday."

About the Match
  • The first 20 minutes was dominated by GU outshooting the Stags 6-1. Neither side was able to find the back of the net as the Stags goalkeeper was impressive early making three saves.
  • In the 26th minute, Natalie Means was streaking down the right flank before she whipped a ball into Shay Montgomery. The junior was able to play a lethal through ball to Maja Lardner who made a beautiful run behind the Stags defenders. Lardner hammered a one-timer low and into the bottom corner giving GU an early 1-0 advantage.
  • With just minutes left in the first half, Jocelyn Lohmeyer was able to beat two defenders and slide one past the Stags keeper on an unassisted effort giving GU a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
  • The Blue & Gray continued to press the Stags coming out of the break. GU had a few good chances but was unable to convert any holding onto the two-goal lead with 25 minutes left in the half.
  • In the 72nd minute, Means was able to beat her defender on the right flank before ripping a shot towards goal. Means was able to slot it home past the outstretched Fairfield keeper giving GU a 3-0 advantage.
  • Georgetown was able to fend off the Stags late efforts to find a goal, securing a 3-0 win. GU will now travel to UCLA to face the Iowa Hawkeyes in the second round on Friday, November 22.

Notable Stats
  • Lardner tallied her team-best 11th goal of the season.
  • Lohmeyer recorded her fourth goal of the season in the first half.
