Georgetown Closes Regular Season at Madison Square Garden Against St. John’s

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team closes the regular season with an old school BIG EAST matchup against the St. John's University Red Storm on Saturday. Tipoff at Madison Square Garden is scheduled for noon and the game will be broadcast on FOX. The Hoyas enter Saturday's contest with a 9-21 overall record and a 2-17 mark in BIG EAST play after a 71-58 setback to Providence in the home finale. The Red Storm enter the game at 18-12 on the year with a 10-9 mark in league action.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Tuesday, the Hoyas fell to the visiting Providence College Friars 71-58 at Capital One Arena in the home finale. Jayden Epps led a quartet of Hoyas in double figures with 16 points to go along with four steals and three rebounds. Dontrez Styles followed up with 13 points and a squad-best eight rebounds. Rowan Brumbaugh chipped in 10 points of his own and paced the offense with two helpers while Drew Fielder came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down four rebounds.
  • Epps is currently fourth in the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 17.9 ppg in 27 outings. He leads a trio of Hoyas in double figures with Styles pitching in 13.1 ppg and Supreme Cook adding 10.9 ppg.
  • Cook's 8.1 rpg ranks fourth in the BIG EAST Conference and is bolstered by his league-leading 4.0 offensive boards per game, which ranks sixth nationally. Additionally, the East Orange native leads the squad in shooting efficiency, knocking down 58.7% (122-208) of his shots. He has tallied eight double-doubles on the season, with the most recent coming against Xavier (15P/14R) on March 2.
  • Epps dishes out 4.3 apg, holding on to eighth in the conference, while his 2.2 3-pointers made per game checks in at ninth in the league.
  • The Hoyas are led by Ed Cooley who is in his 18th season as a collegiate head coach and his first season with Georgetown. In 2022, Cooley was the recipient of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, named the Sporting News Coach of the Year, the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, the NABC District 5 Coach of the Year and the USBWA District 1 Coach of the Year.
 
ABOUT THE RED STORM
  • St. John's is coming off a 104-77 win at DePaul on Tuesday. Six Johnnies were in double figures led by Chris Ledlum and Jordan Dingle who each tallied 19 points. Simeon Wilcher, Nahiem Alleyne and RJ Luis Jr. each came off the bench to tally 12, 11 and 11, respectively, while Daniss Jenkins added 11 of his own. Ledlum's eight rebounds and three steals were a squad best while Dingle's six assists paced the offense.
  • The Red Storm have a quartet of student-athletes averaging double figures led by Jenkins' 14.4 ppg, followed by Joel Soriano (14.2), Dingle (11.3) and Luis Jr. (10.4).
  • Soriano's 9.4 rpg tops the BIG EAST Conference, fueled by his 3.6 offensive boards and 5.7 defensive boards per game, both ranking third in the league. His 58.1% (157-270) shooting ranks fourth in the conference and his 1.7 blocked shots per game is fourth in the BIG EAST.
  • Jenkins dishes out 5.4 apg, ranking third in the league, while his 1.5 steals per game comes in at seventh in the league followed by Ledlum's 1.4 spg, good enough for 10th.
  • St. John's is led by Naismith Hall of Fame Head Coach Rick Pitino. Pitino has made 23 NCAA Tournament appearances with five different schools and advanced to the Final Four seven times, a total reached by only six coaches all-time. He became the first coach to take three different schools to the Final Four and the first coach to win an NCAA Championship at two different schools.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH ST. JOHN'S
  • Saturday's game will be the 124th meeting all-time between the two programs, dating back to December 1909. St. John's holds the 66-57 advantage in the head-to-head series. Georgetown trails 42-24 on the road against the Red Storm. .
  • The last meeting between the two programs was a 90-85 loss at Capital One Arena a couple weeks ago. Epps poured in 31 points to lead a trio of Hoyas in double figures with Brumbaugh chipping in 15 and Cook tallying 12.
  • Cooley is 15-10 all-time against SJU, dropping the last two meetings but winning three of the last five matchups. He is 1-2 against Pitino, with a pair of meetings coming when Pitino was at Louisville. Cooley took a 90-59 win in January 2012 while Pitino defeated Cooley's Friars 80-62 in January 2013.
