Georgetown Women’s Golf to Compete in BIG EAST Championships in South Carolina

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's golf team is in Okatie, South Carolina for the 2024 BIG EAST Championships, held on April 20-22. The 54-hole tournament will be held on the par-72, 6,162-yard course at Callawassie Island. Georgetown will be one of six BIG EAST teams vying for the conference title.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The Hoyas are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Rutgers Invitational with a team score of 52-over 904 (305-299-300) fueled by Megan Gormley's runner-up performance at 5-over 218 (78-70-70). Her performance earned her the third BIG EAST Golfer of the Week honor of her career (April 10).
  • Megan Gormley enters the three-day BIG EAST Championships with a 74.09 stroke average over 22 rounds of stroke play). The senior leads the squads with six rounds under par for the season, with five of those rounds coming in a tournament's third round of action, to go along with one round at par. She has tallied a pair of runner-up performances as she tied for second at the William & Mary Invitational to open the season in September to go along with her second-place showing at the Rutgers Invitational in GU's last outing. She has twice been named the BIG EAST Golfer of the Week this season.
  • Claire Chen will compete in her first ever conference championship. She has carded one round under par this season, a career-best 2-under 70 at the Briar's Creek Invitational, to go along with one round at par.
  • Georgia Ruffolo enters the BIG EAST Championships with a 73.82 stroke average for the season in 22 rounds of stroke play. She won the first individual title of her career with a win at the Lady Bison Invitational in March when she shot an even 213 (74-68-71). It was the 17th individual title in program history as she became just the 10th Hoya to achieve the feat. She has managed three rounds under par this season, including a career-best 5-under 67 at the UNCG Collegiate, to go along with three at par. She was named the BIG EAST Golfer of the Week twice this spring. The 5-under 67 tied the program best for an individual (18 holes).
  • Morgan Smith enters the 54-hole BIG EAST Championships with a 73.55 stroke average (over 22 rounds). She has managed five rounds under par this season, including three-straight at the UNCG Collegiate in October when she carded a 7-under 219 (71-71-67). Her 5-under 67 in the third round tied the program best for an individual (18 holes). Additionally, she adds one round at par for the season. In addition to her runner-up finish at the UNCG Collegiate, the freshman was the runner-up at the Lady Bison Invitational at 3-over 216 (73-70-73) in March. For her efforts this season, she has thrice been named the BIG EAST Golfer of the Week.
  • Juliette Riot has competed in 11 rounds of golf this spring, with one round coming under par. She carded a 2-under 69 in the second round of a shortened GolfWeek Program Challenge
  • Vicky Zhu, a grad student who played four years at Richmond, has played five rounds of golf for the Hoyas this spring.  She tallied a pair of 79s to bookend the Rutgers Invitational, where she tied for 45th.
 
OF NOTE
  • Georgetown totaled six weeks of garnering BIG EAST Golfer of the Week honors this season with three each in the fall and the spring.
  • Ruffolo and Smith's 5-under 67s in the third round at the UNCG Collegiate in October tied Georgetown's program record for best individual 18-hole score. The team's third round of 3-under 285 in the same round tied the program record for best team 18-hole score.
  • At the 2023 Princeton Invitational in the fall, the Hoyas carded a 54-hole total of 10-over 862. The 10-over performance matched the program's best 54-hole outing (2016 Ron Moore Intercollegiate; 10-over 874).
  • Smith's 7-under 209 at the UNCG Collegiate ranks second all-time as an individual 54-hole performance.
 
ABOUT THE BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS
  • In 19 BIG EAST Championships that the Hoyas have participated in, the team has twice been crowned the winner with back-to-back wins in 2017 and 2018.
  • Georgetown has been the runner-up eight times, most recently in 2023. It was just two seasons ago (2022) when the team posted the lowest team round score at the BIG EAST Championships with a 289.
  • Since 2014, the Hoyas have only once not been among the top two teams having turned in a runner-up performance six times and twice won the championships.
  • In 2023, the team carded a 44-over 908 (317-302-289) at Riverton Pointe in Hardeeville, South Carolina. The Hoyas turned in a trio of top-10 performances with Megan Gormley tying for ninth in the field and earning All-BIG EAST honors for the second-consecutive season.
