WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's Tinoda Matsatsa broke his own school record in the 800-meter semifinals on Friday night in Eugene, Oregon at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He earned a time-qualifying spot to Sunday's finals at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Competing in the second of a three-heat semifinal, All-American Tinoda Matsatsa toed the line in the 800-meter semis. Matsatsa came through in seventh place after 400 meters with the top two from each heat advancing as well as the next three fastest times from the entire field. The freshman picked off a pair of runners with 200 meters to go and made up one more spot to finish fourth in his heat with a time of 1:45.12, besting his personal best and the program record that he set at the beginning of the month.
• Matsatsa finished seventh overall in the field and advanced with the last time qualifier.
• The freshman is one of just two collegiate athletes to advance to the finals, joining NCAA champion Shane Cohen from UVA.
