WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's field hockey team heads to the Tar Heel State to open the 2024 season over the weekend. The Hoyas take on Appalachian State on Friday, August 30 before facing Davidson on Sunday, September 1.

About the Hoyas
- Georgetown returns three of its top four scorers from 2023 and nearly 60 percent of its offensive production
- Senior captain Sophie Towne is the Blue & Gray's leading returner with five goals and five assists for 15 points last season
- Towne is joined by fellow senior Emma van der Veen and junior Sydney Yodh, both of whom posted three goals and an assist a year ago
- Senior Elena Leahy and junior Elena Perez Alejandro each had a goal and two assists last season while juniors Ellie Johnson and Julia Hall, along with sophomores Izzy Lee and Caroline Suko, tallied points in 2023 as well
- Defensively, the Hoyas battled in seven one-goal games and look to capitalize on their experience playing down to the wire
- In goal, Georgetown boasts a pair of seasoned returners in Ella Fahey and Bailey Tietz who combined for 145 saves in 2023
Scouting Davidson
- Friday's season opener is slated for 5 p.m. in Davidson, North Carolina
- The Wildcats return their top eight scorers from 2023 and over 90 percent of their total offense
- Sib Naaktgeboren paced Davidson with seven goals and five assists for 19 points last year while Abby Pompeo added eight goals and an assist for 17 points
- Eleven of Davidson's games last season were one-goal affairs but the Wildcats don't return a player with a single minute of collegiate experience between the pipes
- Georgetown has opened the regular season against Davidson every year since 2015 with the exception of 2021
- The Wildcats edged GU 3-2 last year in Towson, Maryland to extending their series winning streak to two following a four-game winning streak by the Blue & Gray
Scouting AppState
- Sunday's game is scheduled for noon in Boone, North Carolina
- The Mountaineers return their top seven scorers and 85 percent of their offense from a team that went 14-5 overall last season
- Charlotte Bosma is ASU's leading returning scorer with seven goals and five assists last year for 19 points
- Lisa Boekaar and Bridget Donovan both added five goals and four assists for 14 points while Hadley Kuzmicky chipped in six goals with an assist for 13 points
- Defensively, the Mountaineers posted five shutouts last year but lose their top goalkeeper, returning only Claire Grenis who posted a 1-1 record with 10 saves in 2023
- Georgetown and AppState faced off in the opening weekend last year at a neutral site in Towson, Maryland with the Mountaineers winning 4-1.
