Georgetown Men’s Basketball Faces St. John’s at World’s Most Famous Arena

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will be back in action on Tuesday, January 14 as the Hoyas face the St. John's University Red Storm at Madison Square Garden. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the World's Most Famous Arena and the game will be broadcast on Peacock. The Blue & Gray enters Tuesday's contest with a 12-4 record overall and a 3-2 mark in league action following a 68-60 loss against then-No. 9/10 UConn  on Saturday.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Saturday, the Hoyas fell short against the No. 9 UConn Huskies 68-60 at Capital One Arena. Curtis Williams Jr. led a duo of Hoyas in double figures with 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Micah Peavy chipped in 14 rounding out those in double figures. Thomas Sorber added a squad-best 10 rebounds marking the sixth time the freshman has recorded double figure rebounds this season.
  • Sorber leads a quartet of Hoyas in double figures, averaging 14.8 ppg, good enough to rank 12th in the BIG EAST. Jayden Epps chips in 13.9 ppg, followed by Malik Mack (13.6 ppg) and Peavy (13.3 ppg). With all four ranking among the top 30 in scoring in the BIG EAST, Georgetown and Marquette are the only two institutions with four players ranking among the top 30 in scoring in conference play.
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass grabbing 8.5 rpg, which leads the league, followed by Drew Fielder (5.5 rpg) and Peavy (5.0 rpg).
  • Mack paces the offense dishing out 4.6 apg with Peavy right behind him with 3.9 apg.
  • Peavy is tied for 24th in the country and ranks second in the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.31 pockets per game.
  • Sorber has five double-doubles to his name, tied for second in the league. The five double-doubles are tied for third nationally among freshmen.
  • Defensively, the team ranks third in the league in steals per game (8.5). The Hoyas are forcing opponents to commit 14.38 turnovers per game, which ranks third in the conference.
  • In league games, Georgetown is third in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, boasting an impressive 46.9% shooting efficiency.
 
ABOUT ST. JOHN'S
  • In its most recent outing, St. John's (14-3, 5-1 BE) defeated Villanova 80-68 following a second-half surge. RJ Luis Jr. led four in double figures with 30 points followed by Aaron Scott (12), Deivon Smith (12) and Zuby Ejiofor (11). Luis Jr. grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds for the double-double while Kadary Richmond paced the offense with five assists off the bench. St. John's shot 40.0% (22-55) for the game while holding Villanova to 39.3% (22-56) shooting.
  • Luis Jr. leads the SJU offense in scoring averaging 17.4 ppg. Ejiofor follows up Luis Jr. averaging 14.7 ppg while Richmond and Deivon Smith chip in 10.8 ppg apiece to round out the Johnnies averaging double figures.
  • Ejiofor leads the Red Storm on the glass with 8.1 rpg, followed by Luis Jr. (6.6 rpg) and Smith (5.7 rpg).
  • Richmond paces the offense, dishing out 4.5 apg, which ranks eighth in the conference.
  • St. John's is led by Rick Pitino in his second season at the helm of the Johnnies.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH ST. JOHN'S
  • Tuesday's matchup will be the 125th all-time meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1909-10 season.
  • Georgetown trails 67-57 in the all-time series. The Blue & Gray's last victory over the Red Storm came on December 13, 2020, with a 97-94 overtime win at McDonough Arena.
  • Head Coach Ed Cooley is 15-11 against St. John's in his career and is 1-3 all-time against Rick Pitino.
