Georgetown Hosts No. 15 St. John’s in Midweek Showdown

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team will host the No. 15 St. John's Red Storm on Tuesday, January 28 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FS1. Georgetown enter's Tuesday's contest with a 13-7 record overall and a 4-5 mark in league action following a 78-68 loss at Providence on Saturday.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • On Saturday, despite career games from Micah Peavy and Thomas Sorber, the Hoyas couldn't fend off the Providence Friars, falling 78-68 at Amica Mutual Pavilion. Peavy led all scorers with a career-best 27 points on 12-for-19 shooting while Sorber followed closely, matching his career high with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.
  • For their efforts over the last two games, Sorber was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season after averaging 20.0 ppg, 13.0 rpg and 3.0 apg while Peavy was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. Peavy averaged 25.5 ppg on 60.0% (21-35) shooting, and grabbed 3.0 rpg over the week while dishing out 1.5 apg and picking 1.5 pockets per game.
  • Sorber leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures posting 14.8 ppg, a mark that ranks 12th in the BIG EAST. Peavy chips in 14.6 ppg, followed by Malik Mack (13.0 ppg) and Jayden Epps (12.9 ppg). Georgetown and Villanova are the only institutions with four players among the top 30 in scoring in the league.
  • Sorber leads the squad on the glass managing 9.1 rpg, which leads the league, followed by Fielder (5.6 rpg) and Peavy (5.2 rpg).
  • Mack paces the offense dishing out 4.6 apg, which ranks eighth in the league.
  • Peavy is tied for 28th in the country and ranks second in the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.25 pockets per game.
  • Sorber has seven double-doubles to his name, ranking first in the league. The seven double-doubles rank first nationally among freshmen, outpacing Cooper Flagg (Duke), Ace Bailey (Rutgers), Jayden Quaintance (Arizona State), and Donnie Freeman (Syracuse), who each have six.
  • Defensively, the team ranks second in the BIG EAST and 16th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (39.1%). The Hoyas are third in the league in steals per game (8.1) and are forcing opponents to commit 13.9 turnovers per game, which ranks fourth in the conference.
 
ABOUT THE No. 15 RED STORM
  • In its most recent outing, St. John's (17-3, 8-1 BE) defeated the Xavier Musketeers 79-71 in overtime at Madison Square Garden on January 22. Kadary Richmond led a quartet of Johnnies in double figures with 19 points followed by Zuby Ejiofor (16), Simeon Wilcher (16) and RJ Luis Jr. (16). Ejiofor led the Red Storm on the glass pulling down eight boards while Richmond and Luis Jr. followed closely with seven apiece. Richmond paced the offense with five assists in the contest.
  • SJU shot 46.7% (28-60) from the field, while hitting only one 3-pointer on 12 attempts.
  • Luis Jr. leads a quartet of Johnnies averaging double figures posting 17.8 ppg, followed by Ejiofor (14.6 ppg), Richmond (11.2 ppg) and Deivon Smith (10.3 ppg).
  • Ejiofor leads SJU on the glass grabbing 8.2 rpg, followed by Luis Jr. (6.6 rpg).
  • Richmond paces the offense, dishing out 4.8 apg, followed by Smith with 4.3 apg.
  • St. John's is led by Rick Pitino, who is in his second season at the helm of the Red Storm.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES WITH ST. JOHN'S
  • Tuesday's matchup will be the second meeting between the two teams this season and the 126th all-time meeting between the two teams dating back to the 1909-10 season. St. John's leads 68-57 in the all-time series. The Blue & Gray's last victory over SJU was on December 13, 2020 when GU defeated SJU 97-94 in overtime at McDonough Arena.
  • St. John's defeated Georgetown in the first meeting of the season on January 14, 63-58 at Madison Square Garden. Peavy led a trio of Hoyas in double figures with 21 points followed by Mack (13) and Curtis Williams Jr. with 11 off the bench.
  • Head Coach Ed Cooley is 15-12 against St. John's in his career and is 1-4 all-time against Rick Pitino.
