Georgetown Men’s Basketball Travels to Marquette for BIG EAST Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team is set to travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to face the Marquette University Golden Eagles on Wednesday, December 17 for its first BIG EAST matchup of the 2025-26 season. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET at Fiserv Forum.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • The 2025-26 season marks the third year under Head Coach Ed Cooley. In his second season, Cooley guided Georgetown to doubling its wins from the season before and finishing with an overall record of 18-16 and 8-12 in BIG EAST play. The squad earned a bid to the inaugural College Basketball Crown, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual Crown Champions Nebraska.
  • In the last outing, Georgetown defeated Saint Peter's in overtime on Saturday afternoon, 76-68, at McDonough Arena. Julius Halaifonua led a trio of Hoyas in double figures with a career-high 22 points on 75.0% (9-12) shooting from the field while adding a squad-best nine rebounds to go along with two blocks. Caleb Williams posted 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jeremiah Williams came off the bench to round out those in double figures with 10 points on 60.0% (3-5) shooting. KJ Lewis paced the offense with five assists while Malik Mack added four.
  • A quintet of Hoyas are scoring in double figures led by Lewis who is tallying 15.6 ppg, while Mack averages 14.8 ppg, Vince Iwuchukwu and Caleb Williams both manage 11.8 ppg, and Julius Halaifonua notches 10.3 ppg. Lewis' 15.6 ppg ranks eighth in the BIG EAST Conference.
  • Lewis and C. Williams lead the Hoyas on the glass with both averaging 5.9 rpg, followed by Julius Halaifonua with 5.2 rpg.
  • Mack paces the offense with 4.5 apg, which is tied for fourth in the league, followed by Lewis with 3.1 apg and Jeremiah Williams with 2.5 apg.
  • Lewis leads the BIG EAST and the Hoyas in strips with 2.5 spg, while Kayvaun Mulready tallies 1.3 spg.
  • Before the start of the 2025-26 season, Lewis was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team and Mack was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Third Team. The Hoyas were also selected sixth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
  • Marquette enters the matchup with a 5-6 start to the 2025-26 season.
  • Marquette went 27-10 during the 2024-25 season with a 14-6 mark in BIG EAST action.
  • In its last outing, Marquette fell to No. 6 Purdue on Saturday at Mackey Arena, 79-59. Royce Parham tallied 19 points and Chase Ross added a 10 piece. Ben Gold grabbed a squad-best five rebounds while Sean Jones' five and Nigel James Jr.'s four assists paced the Golden Eagles offense.
  • Ross leads Marquette in scoring, averaging 18.6 ppg while James Jr. rounds out those averaging double figures with 11.1 ppg.
  • Gold leads the Golden Eagles on the glass, grabbing 7.0 rpg.
  • Jones' 4.6 apg paces the Golden Eagles offense.
  • Marquette is led by Head Coach Shaka Smart in his fifth season.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
  • Georgetown and Marquette will meet for the 40th time in program history, with the Hoyas holding a 14-25 record in the series.
  • The last meeting between the two teams was March 1, 2025 with the Blue & Gray falling 76-61 at Capital One Arena. Micah Peavy, now with the New Orleans Pelicans, led a trio of Hoyas with 15 points.
  • Cooley maintains a 10-16 record against the Golden Eagles and a 4-6 mark against Smart.
