Georgetown Men’s Basketball Hosts No. RV/25 St. John’s on New Year’s Eve

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team returns to Capital One Arena Wednesday night to host the No. RV/25 St. John's Red Storm. Tipoff on New Year's Eve is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET in the District.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • In the last outing, Georgetown (9-4, 1-1 BE) defeated Coppin State on December 22, 97-67, at McDonough Arena. Julius Halaifonua led a quintet of Hoyas in double figures with 20 points on seven made field goals. Isaiah Abraham scored a career-high 17 points (6-7 FG), Jayden Fort added 15 points (5-5 FG), KJ Lewis chipped in 15 points (4-7 FG) while Langston Love pitched in 10 points of his own (4-6 FG). Halaifonua grabbed a squad-best eight rebounds. Lewis added seven rebounds and paced the offense with eight assists while Fort, in his first career start, managed three blocks.
  • For their efforts, Halaifonua and Lewis were both named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. It was the third and fourth nods to the honor roll for the Hoyas this season with Lewis earning his third accolade while Halaifonua earned his first nod.
  • A quintet of Hoyas are scoring in double figures led by Malik Mack who is tallying 14.5 ppg, while Lewis averages 14.3 ppg, Halaifonua scores 12.5 ppg, Vince Iwuchukwu manages 11.8 ppg and Caleb Williams notches 11.2 ppg. Mack's 14.5 ppg ranks ninth in the BIG EAST Conference, while Lewis' 14.3 ppg is 10th in the conference.
  • C. Williams leads the Hoyas on the glass grabbing 5.9 rpg, followed by Lewis (5.8 rpg) and Halaifonua (5.2 rpg).
  • Mack paces the offense with 4.5 apg, which ranks fourth in the league, followed by Lewis who averages 3.2 apg.
  • Lewis is first in the BIG EAST and leads the Hoyas in strips with 2.2 spg.
  • Before the start of the 2025-26 season, Lewis was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team and Mack was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Third Team. The Hoyas were also selected sixth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll in Head Coach Ed Cooley's third season at the helm.
 
ABOUT THE RED STORM
  • St. John's enters the matchup with an 8-4 start to the 2025-26 season, including a 1-0 mark in BIG EAST play.
  • St. John's went 31-5 during the 2024-25 season with an 18-2 mark in the conference.
  • In its last outing, St. John's defeated Harvard on December 23 at Carnesecca Arena, 85-59. Zubi Ejiofor, Ian Jackson and Bryce Hopkins scored 14 points apiece while Joson Sanon added 10 points. Ejiofor led the Red Storm in rebounds with nine, while Dillon Mitchell grabbed seven. Hopkins and Ejiofor paced the Red Storm offense with four assists each.
  • Hopkins leads SJU in scoring, averaging 13.9 ppg, followed by Ejiofor (13.8 ppg), Jackson (11.6 ppg), Sanon (10.7 ppg) and Oziyah Sellers (10.6 ppg).
  • Ejiofor leads the Red Storm on the glass, grabbing 7.2 rpg.
  • Ejiofor's 2.8 apg paces the St. John's offense.
  • St. John's is led by Head Coach Rick Pitino in his third season.
 
ABOUT THE SERIES
  • Georgetown and St. John's will meet for the 127th time in program history, with the Red Storm  holding a 69-57 record in the series.
  • The last meeting between the two teams was January 28, 2025 with the Blue & Gray falling 66-41 at Capital One Arena. Thomas Sorber, now with the defending NBA Champions Oklahoma City Thunder, and Mack combined for 21 points in the setback. Mack led all scorers with 13 points on 4-for-9 shooting, while Sorber posted eight points.
  • The last GU win was on December 13, 2020, a 97-94 overtime win at home at McDonough Arena.
  • Cooley is 15-13 all-time against St. John's but 1-5 against Pitino.
