Certified athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing, and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As a part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents.

Athletic training is not the same profession as personal training. And certified athletic trainers work with more than just athletes- they can be found just about anywhere that people are physically active.

To become certified athletic trainers, students must pass a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification. Once certified, they must meet ongoing continuing education requirements in order to remain certified.

National Athletic Trainers' Association

Georgetown University employs 12 certified athletic trainers who work with team physicians Dr. Blair Heinke and Dr. Kori Hudson, in collaboration with orthopedic surgeons Dr. John Klimkiewicz and Dr. William Postma. Our certified athletic trainers have passed the certification exam and graduated from athletic training programs. The staff has compiled qualifications such as master's degrees in exercise science, athletic training/sports medicine, and science in health and human performance.

Each team at Georgetown University is assigned a certified athletic trainer. All injuries should be reported to your assigned certified athletic trainer. If you do not know who your assigned athletic trainer is, you can find them listed here or please report to John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center (TAC), Sports Medicine Center, lower level room L30, to find your assigned athletic trainer.

When an athlete is injured or experiences an illness, they will be evaluated by an athletic trainer. The athlete will be treated for that injury/illness and an athletic trainer will determine if an appointment with a team physician is necessary. The team physician's clinic hours vary depending on season and semester, but clinics are open most days of the week.
